He was a World War II veteran

McHENRY - Edwin F. Reid, 89, of McHenry, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Rushville, Neb., to Edwin F. and Olive (Evans) Reid Sr. He married Eleanore Rankin on May 7, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McHenry. The Rev. Wm. O'Rouke performed the ceremony.

He served as an engineer in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England, France and Germany during World War II.

He owned and operated Anderson Tree Service until his retirement in 1978.

He had been a member of Zion Lutheran Church in McHenry since 1940, where he served as head usher, elder and volunteer.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 491, and served as post commander, finance officer and poppy chairman, and in many other offices and chairmanships. He put American flags on veterans' graves in five cemeteries each Memorial Day well into his 80s.

He was a charter member of the American Legion Rifle Squad and Rifle Squad past commander. He was also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600.

He was manager of the Viscount Drum and Bugle Corps for 11 years. He was grand marshal of the 1988 Fiesta Day parade and stepped off the parade for more than 25 years. He was proud that the parade started on time every year he was in charge.

He was a fundraiser for the original McHenry Hospital.

His hobbies included golfing, growing roses and tomatoes, reading, and visiting Nebraska. He was a Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his wife; six children, Edwin "Bud" (Victoria) Reid III of Wales, Wis., Bernadine (Michael) Mould of Howell, Mich., Charlene (Thomas) Reichert of Carlsbad, Calif., Ronald Reid of Cedarburg, Wis., Acceneth "Cindy" Bateman of Johnsburg and Noelle (Terrance) Andrews of Cedarburg, Wis.; a former son-in-law, Hugh "Skeet" Bateman of Johnsburg; five foster children, Shirley Epperhart of Phoenix, Patricia (Michael) Rask of Merriman, Neb., Paulo (Daisy) Lopes of Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, Georgia (Evripidis) Panagopolous of Patras, Greece, and Kelly (Carole) Low of McHenry; five sisters, June Morris of Hay Springs, Neb., Lois (Arthur) Jungck of Rushville, Mildred Wefso of Rapid City, S.D., Dinah Keeley of Medinah, Texas, and Anna Wimer of Kerrville, Texas; two brothers, James Reid of Hulett, Wyo., and B.H. "Bud" (Mary Rose) Reid of Hastings, Neb.; 14 grandchildren, Amanda, Shane, Lanna, Grace, Ean, Paige, Brittany, Shannon, Trae, Adam (Leah), Alisha, Nick, Erik and Chris; four stepgrandchildren; 13 foster grandchildren; and 18 stepgreat-grandchildren and foster great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Zella Anderson and Norma Harris; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Reid; three brothers-in-law, Bruce Morris, Keith Harris and Lyle Anderson; and close family friends, Victor and Marie Howe.

The visitation will be from 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, until the 4 p.m. memorial service at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Road, McHenry.

Friends and family will gather after the memorial service at the American Legion, 1331 N. Riverside Drive, McHenry.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seasons Hospice, 1600 Dempster St., Park Ridge, IL 60068.
