Odemia Hall Obituary

Odemia Hall

Mia passed away at home early in the morning of June 8th after a courageous battle with cancer, just 4 days shy of her 51st birthday.

Mia was born in Jutiapa, Guatemala on June 12, 1971 to Consuelo Zapata and Elixalen Moran and immigrated to Los Angeles with her mother and brother in 1980. Throughout her life she made many trips to Guatemala to share with others the beauty of the country she is from and to visit family but made California her home. Many of you may know her birthday to be August 27th, but that's a story for another time.

It was quintessential for Mia to be positive, happy and the life of the party. Her personality was contagious and working with Mia was just plain fun. Mia had many careers throughout her life. She worked for the County of Los Angeles and twice worked for different law firms. In 2008 she earned her Associates degree, a Paralegal Certificate and began learning French during an exchange trip to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. She spent the last ten years working as a production planner. Mia loved to travel and during her few years as a flight attendant for United, just prior to 9/11, she traveled all over the US and to London many times. Sadly, she never completed her dream of going to Paris.

The simplest pleasures in life brought Mia great joy. She loved spending time with friends and family, playing games, telling stories, and creating memories, a glass of wine in her hand and laughing the whole time. She loved goofy funny movies and TV shows, using lines from them all of the time to create laughter. Reviewing the list of her favorites below may remind you of some of them and provide a glimpse of her uncanny ability to find happiness in everyday activities. Mia's laugh could brighten up the gloomiest of rooms. She is a special woman who is loved deeply and was taken too soon.

Mia is survived by her husband of sixteen years, Jeff; her brother, Elixalen; stepson, Kyle; stepdaughter, Bridgette; her dear puppies, Nacho and Charlie; many aunts, uncles, nieces, and cousins.

Family, friends, and anyone touched by this amazing woman are invited to celebrate her life and say goodbye at any or all of the following:

Not a day goes by that I don´t think of you. You had a huge impact on our lives. It still doesn´t seem real to me that you are truly gone, because I feel your presence everywhere and see constant reminders of you. You may be physically gone, but you will continue to live in our memories and we will continue to cherish the times we had with you. We love you Tia

Mia was my friend and neighbor. We became friends by walking our dogs. She was always so happy and vibrant. Every time I would see her, if it was walking her dogs, or driving by, she would always give me an excited greeting with that big beautiful smile. I only knew her for a few years, but I feel blessed to have known her even though it was a short time. I will always remember Mia's excitement for life.

Our family has known Mia since she started working at Kashi. We had the pleasure of socializing with her at work events and in social circles outside of work. She was one of the sweetest people we've ever met.

I always enjoyed being with Mia as she always put everyone at ease and kept things light. About 5 years ago I had the privilege to work with her 1on1 when she generously donated her time to Girls Inc. of San Diego County. During a critical time in the organization's lifecycle, Mia researched grant opportunities and helped the development team apply and secure grants to benefit the under-served girls in San Diego. Her work helped change the trajectory of the organization and its ability to become more financial stable, and continue to serve hundred of girls - many Latina young women and girls of color.

In memory of Mia, Greg and I have donated funds to Girls Inc. of San Diego so more Latina girls can build extraordinary lives like Mia did. We love you very muuush Mia.

Besos,
Carla

I had the privilege to work with Mia in Oxnard at Tree Top. She was so vibrant, full of life and laughter. My condolences to Jeff, Karina and her entire family for the loss of such an amazing person. She loved to share stories of her family, dancing at her favorite place in San Diego, Cahoots. She loved her mija Karina so much. I had the great privilege of working with Odemia for a period of time at LA County. During our conversations, I learned about her kindness and great laugh and inner joy. Finding out about Odemia's passing brings me sudden sadness for I was thinking about her just a few weeks ago, quite randomly. When I read all of this, I see a person who lived a rich and full life and pursued her ambitions and dreams to the greatest extent she could and I'm so grateful to have known her even for such a short time. Blessed are those who were loved by her great heart.
