Odette Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2006.
DAVIS, ODETTE MARIE Odette Marie Davis passed away on October 24, 2006. Odette was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1921. After graduation from the University of Wisconsin in 1943, she entered Naval Officer's Training at Smith College. She became one of the first W.A.V.E. Officers in World War II and was assigned as the Company Commander of 500 women recruits. While in the Navy, her brother introduced her to his handsome shipmate, John. They were married soon after the war, and she began her career as a Navy wife and mother. Although she and her husband moved all over the world, they always called Coronado "home". Daughter Ann was born in Wisconsin while John was in the Western Pacific and daughter Betsy was born in France while John was serving with the SIXTH Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. Through the years, she acted as a surrogate mother to the wives of the men in her husband's various commands, and was active in the Navy Wives Club and Navy Relief. After her husband, Rear Admiral John B. Davis, retired in 1973, they enjoyed traveling the world. She was a Delta Gamma, a member of the PEO Sisterhood, a library volunteer, and a long-time member of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Coronado. She was gracious, intelligent and beautiful, and enriched the lives of her friends and family who love her and will dearly miss her. She is survived by her daughter Ann Scott of Coronado; her daughter and son-in-law Betsy and Ray Gardner of Denver, Colorado; her brother and sister-in-law Philip and Betsy Hendrickson of Green Bay, Wisconsin; her grandchildren Charlotte and Tom Rudowicz of Coronado; Jed and Elizabeth Alexander of Des Moines, Iowa; John Gardner of Denver, Colorado; and her great-grandson Tommy Rudowicz of Coronado. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2006 at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, 10th St. and C Ave., Coronado; with interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on November 6th. Memorial donations may be sent to the Blind Children's Center, 4120 Marathon St., Los Angeles, CA 90029 or the Braille Institute, 4555 Executive Drive, San Diego, CA 92121-3025.Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
