Olga GRAHAM Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Jan. 23 to Jan. 28, 2016.
GRAHAM, Olga Edythe (nee Bortnik)
August 8, 1937 - January 20, 2016
Our dear loving mother, Olga, passed peacefully in her home at the age of 78 years.
Olga is survived by her 4 children Stewart (Laura), Lorna, Jean Carruthers (Paul), Sonia Graham; brothers Phillip (Teri) and Max (Judy); grandchildren Robert, Jessica, Andrew, Elizabeth, Grace, Hannah; great-grandchildren Colt, Violet, Isla; nieces and nephews; Aunt Manya and cousins in Belarus. Olga was predeceased by her husband Eliot (2006), daughter Laurie (2013), parents Maksym and Elizabeth, brother Stephen and sisters Tanya and Helen.
Olga was born in Creston, BC and grew up in the Crowsnest Pass region, graduating high school in Cranbrook, where her parents retired. She attended business college in Calgary while working as a stenographer and teletypist. She met Eliot at a dance hall in Balzac and eloped in Billings, Montana.
Olga dedicated her life to her family. She was an exceptional family matriarch and friend. Relationships and family bonds were important to her. She was consistently compassionate, taking time to listen and offer kind, sound advice to all who knew her.
A visitation will be held at Westlawn Funeral Home Thursday, January 28 from 7-9 p.m. The service will be held at Trinity United Church Friday, January 29 at 10 a.m.
Donations (in lieu of flowers) can be made to the Edmonton Humane Society.

My sympathy to Olga's family. You will surely miss her kind presence. Over the years our paths have crossed many times. Olga always had a smile I will miss seeing her out and about the neighborhood and stopping for a chat. Our thoughts are with you.

Aunt Olga will be dearly missed. She had an undeniable spirit, a love of life, an absolute dedication to family, and a wonderfully generous nature. Visiting her was such a treat. I always left with a new story about our family history and a new piece of life wisdom. She had a way of making all of us feel special. My deepest condolences to my cousins and second cousins, my dad, and my uncle on the loss of a truly unique and wonderful mom, grandma, and sister. Rest peacefully, Aunt Olga.

My dear mother Olla, Olga. No one can replace you mom and there are no words to express this loss. You gave us the gift of freedom, creativity of spirit and mind, you gave us love that was never unkind. You taught us to read and write before we were 5; you taught us to do our own taxes from our first job; you recycled and reused before it became so popular; you were relaxed about things that some people get all tied-up in a knot about; you had so much inner pride and humility that you didn't need to brag. There were so many difficult times in life but you stayed strong. I watched you help out so many people, some grateful, some not so much, but you didn't let things bother you- you stayed true and loyal to family and your friends regardless. The world wasn't always as kind as you were but we know you were better than that; you were above it all. I can't believe you're gone. I love you mom

Aunt Olga Graham would call every so often to see how we were doing (having long chats with both me and my wife Corinne). We are sorry we couldn't visit with her in-person recently. Our heartfelt condolences go to her family (Stewart Graham and his family, Lorna, Jean and herfamily, and Sonia Graham) and her brothers (my dad Max Bortnik, and uncle Philip M Bortnik) and all others who knew her.
