Olga Hess Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 4 to Jan. 5, 2006.
HESS Olga Bilinski Hess died Friday, December 24, 2005 at the Holy Cross Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Silver Springs, Maryland, where she was evacuated after Hurricane Katrina from the Chateau de Notre Apartments in New Orleans, LA. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 6, 1918, she had recently turned 87 years of age. While visiting Miami, FL during World War II, she met her husband, the late Robert D. Hess, a native of Winnetka, IL and a U.S. Naval Aviator stationed in Key West, FL. After the War the couple moved to New Orleans, living on Painters Street in Gentilly from 1947 until they moved to Old Military Road in Covington, LA in 1952. While in Gentilly, Mrs. Hess' mother died and her three younger brothers, Donald, Richard and Bobby moved in with them until the early 1950's. In 1955, Bob Hess left his job as Southern Area Manager for Dale Carnegie courses and accepted a position as Head of Marketing for the National Bank of Commerce at which time the couple moved to Beverly Drive in Old Metairie with their children: Anne, Robby and David. While living there, two daughters were born: Christina and Mary Quin. After the tragic death of their eldest daughter, Anne, in 1964, Mrs. Hess took a job at the Tulane University Law School, eventually becoming Assistant to the Dean. In 1966, the Hesses moved to Prytania Street in Uptown New Orleans. Upon Mr. Hess' retirement from FNBC, the couple moved to 15th Street in Covington. Shorlty after Mr. Hess' death in 1990, Mrs. Hess moved to the Chateau de Notre Apartment on Burdette Street in New Orleans, which was her home address at the time of her death. Mrs. Hess is survived by sons: Robert D. Hess, Jr. and his wife, Tish and their children: Robby, Reed, Lori and Ryan and David E. Hess; daughters: Christina E. Hess and Mary Quin Hess Baker, her husband, Searcy Baker and their daughter, Annabel; along with three brothers and their wives: Donald and Rita Bilinski of Northridge, CA, Richard and Gloria Bilinski of Auburn, PA and Robert and Karen Bilinski of Philadelphia, PA; also six grandsons: Jonathan, Benjamin, Ethan, Christian, Elliot and Holden; along with many nephews and nieces. A Funeral Mass will be held for family members and close friends at St. Edward Catholic Church, Metairie, LA on Friday, January 6, 2006. In lieu of flowers, MASSES are preferred.

Dear Robby, David, Tina, and Quin:

I loved your mother and will miss her greatly. She and your father brought much happiness to my mother (your "Auntie Sis") and to me over my entire life (from about age 9, when they were married). All of you and your sister Anne were a source of much pride, joy, and comfort to my "Aunt Smoky", always. I hope you can rest comforted with this knowledge. Much love to you all at this difficult time.

I am a friend of Tina's and met Mrs. Hess just once recently. Tina has told me some of her mother's early life, and from my meeting with her, seeing her beautiful calligraphy work, and the hearing the stories from Tina, I’m guessing she was quite a pip in her day, and led a fairly exciting and very good life. It is sad when we have to let go of our loved ones. Rich Miller

I was very sorry to learn of Mrs. Hess' death - she was always so helpful to the law students - I have fond memories of her from when I was in law school.

Robby, I was sorry to see of your mother's death. To have that happen right at Christmas on top of Katrina must be hard. Please express my sympathy to the rest of your brothers and sisters. I will remember her in my Masses.
