Olympia Caesar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2010.
FAIRHAVEN - Olympia (Freitas) Caesar, known to most of her friends as Ollie, mother of six and retired school teacher, died Friday, May 7, 2010 at the age of 90. She was the former spouse of Frank Caesar of Dartmouth and daughter of the late John B. and Rosa (Pinto) Freitas.

She was born in Fall River and resided in New Bedford for many years before moving to Acushnet in 2004 to live with her daughter Rosemary and her family. She attended Our Lady Of Fatima Church.

While raising her family, Olympia earned her Bachelor's degree from Southeastern Massachusetts University (UMASS Dartmouth). As a result, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher. She taught Kindergarten at Carney Academy in New Bedford and retired from there in 1984.

She was an avid reader and she loved singing and playing the piano. She had a well-deserved reputation for her ability to see the light side and to bring her special brand of humor to almost any situation. Olympia was a member of the Legion of Mary for many years and volunteered regularly to visit the residents of several area nursing homes. She will be missed by her many friends at Brandon Woods Day Program in New Bedford.

She is survived by her children: Robert Caesar and his wife, Mary Ellen of E. Sandwich, Mary Ann Caesar of Minnesota, Paul Caesar and his wife, Leslie of Florida, Rosemary Duclos and her husband, Larry of Acushnet, Kathryn Caesar and her friend, Robin Oliver of New Bedford, and Rick Caesar and his wife, Brook of New Bedford; as well as by her brother, Antone Freitas of Pennsylvania; her sisters, Mary Freitas and Alice Rethemeyer, of Florida; 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Charles, Al, Paul & George Freitas.

In lieu of flowers, Donations in Olympia's memory may be made to The Jimmy Fund, Dana- Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445-7226 Attn: Contribution Services.

Visiting hours are Tuesday evening 4:00-8:00 in the Aubertine-Lopes Funeral Home, 129 Allen St., New Bedford. Her funeral will be Wednesday morning 8:45 in the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in Our Lady Of Fatima Church at 10:00. Interment in St. John Cemetery.
