Omar Pounds Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2010.
On Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010, Otho Lamar Pounds traveled to the West to meet the Great Architect after a lengthy illness. Service: 3 p.m. Tuesday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel of Fort Worth. Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Park. O.L. was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Palestine to Otho Lamar Pounds and Florence Wyatt Pounds. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably in the Pacific during World War II. Soon after his discharge from military service, he met the love of his life, Eloise, and they were married April 16, 1946. They loved to travel around the U.S. and made trips to Hawaii and England, and cruises to the Bahamas. They were together 62 years, raised three children and lived a great life until Eloise passed away in 2008. O.L. had a variety of jobs in the early years. While a member of the Fort Worth Junior Chamber of Commerce, he met many individuals who would shape the rest of his life when he found his other love, building things. O.L. worked with many companies over more than 20 years as a construction manager, building many homes, multifamily complexes and several high rise office buildings throughout the Metroplex. He was well respected and known as a tough boss. He swore he would never build a bad building, and they all still stand today. He was a Master Mason with Hemphill Heights Lodge, a 33rd-degree member of Moslah Temple for many years and volunteered as chapter advisor of Fort Worth Chapter, Order of DeMolay. He also became involved with amateur radio and became part of a team of HAM operators that volunteer their time for emergency communications, weather spotting and assisting the fire departments in Tarrant and Johnson counties. He was recognized many times by the Fort Worth Fire Department and received the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award for volunteer service. We would like to thank Dr. David Capper and Covenant Hospice nurses, Tonya, Francis, and Donna; aides, Linda and Christy; and all the other for their care, support and awesome work. O.L. was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a grandson. Survivors: O.L. loved his family and is survived by his children, Karen (Charles) Tackett, Barbara (Jim) Davies and Richard (Ann) Pounds; four grandchildren; a step-grandson; four great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and a multitude of extended family.
