Orchid Curtis-Hughley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2025.
On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Orchid Renee Curtis-Hughley gained victory over this world and peacefully earned her wings. Born on August 27, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan, Orchid was the cherished daughter of Marie and Harold Curtis. From a young age, she embodied quiet strength, a generous spirit, and a deep love for both people and animals. Orchid graduated from Crossland High School in 1978. With unwavering determination, she later returned to school to pursue her passion for healthcare. In 2011, she proudly earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Trinity College - an achievement that reflected her lifelong commitment to caring for others.

On June 24, 1989, Orchid married the love of her life, Emory "Duke" Hughley III. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with three children: Emory, Cameron and Myasia. Orchid's greatest joy came from her family, especially her six beloved grandchildren. She treasured every moment with them, creating memories filled with laughter, love and heartfelt wisdom.

Orchid's professional journey included serving as a Cardiac Cath Lab Technician at Washington Hospital Center and later as a Registered Nurse at Kaiser Permanente. She also worked part-time at Choice Community Health in Prince George's County, Maryland.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Highland Park for many years. Known for her compassion, nurturing spirit and deep Christian faith, Orchid's heart was always open to others. She offered love and support without hesitation - whether caring for the sick, volunteering in the community, or rescuing animals in need. Her home radiated warmth, kindness and love.

Orchid found joy in all of life's pleasures. She enjoyed traveling with her twin sister Violet. They shared every birthday, traveling together and enjoying each other's company. They laughed, cried, talked all night, and shared space in the womb. They were best friends. She doted on her grandchildren, caring for her pets, and selflessly giving to others. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. Her presence was a blessing, and her legacy of strength, service, and unconditional love will continue to shine in all the lives she touched.

Orchid was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emory "Duke" Hughley III; her parents, Marie and Harold Curtis; sisters Jeanette McDonald, Scherri Curtis, and Antoinette Curtis; her father-in-law and her mother-in-law, Emory Hughley Jr. and Carrie Hughley; and sister-in-law Cassandra Hughley. She is survived by her loving children; Cameron Hughley (Janae) and Myasia Hughley; stepson, Emory Stewart; grandchildren: Amyrah Eke, Zyair Steele, Journi Hughley, Azari Steele, Cairo Hughley, and Saiore Hughley; siblings: Yvonne Tolson (Fred), Violet Curtis, Christy Davis, and Harold Curtis Jr.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and devoted friends who will continue to honor her memory and the close bonds they shared.
