Ortence Norlund Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 23, 2013.
Ortencia 'Ortence' Ramos Norlund
1932-2013

Ortencia "Ortence" Ramos Norlund, age 80, passed away on March 22, 2013, at the Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa.

Ortence was born on May 5, 1932, in Williams, Ariz., to Francisco and Tomasa Espinoza. In 1935, the family traveled from Arizona and settled in St. Helena.

Ortence met and married Guadalupe Ramos and started a family. After becoming widowed, Ortence spent her years as a beloved librarian, raising her children and helping to tend to her elderly parents.

In the 1970s, Ortence met Robert Norlund and they later married in 1998. They then settled in Elk Ridge, Utah, where many members of the community and family were welcomed into their home.

After Robert's passing, Ortence maintained households both in Napa and Elk Ridge, enjoying the scenery and beauty of both locations, especially the snow-covered Wasatch Mountains in Utah. When she was not enjoying a good novel, Ortence loved quilting, music, cooking, nature and participating in Catholic church events.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jose Guadalupe Ramos and Robert Norlund; sons, Leonardo Angel Ramos and Rodolfo Guadalupe Ramos; as well as her siblings, Celia Rodriguez, Joe Espinoza and Dolores Russi.

Ortence is survived by her son, Daniel (Debbie) Ramos of American Canyon and Rebecca (David) Ramos Bejar of Napa. Ortence was loved and will be missed by her grandchildren, Vanessa (Alex) Carrasco, Matthew Bejar, Christopher and Daniella Ramos; and her great-grandchildren, Tylen and Jacqueline Carrasco. Ortence is also survived by her siblings, Mercy Mora, Salvador Espinoza, Jess Espinoza, Cora Geisner, Frank Espinoza, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ortence's family wants to thank her supportive friends from the Napa Valley and Utah. They also want to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Queen of the Valley Medical Center.
Public viewing will be held on Monday, April 1, from 5-7 p.m., with the Rosary given at 7 p.m. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at the St. Helena Catholic Church, 1340 Tainter St., St. Helena.

We were so very sorry to hear of this! She was such a wonderful woman, lighting up the whole library with her warmth and enthusiasm. We are both sending very warm thoughts to her whole family.

Dear Dan, Becky and families, We want you to know that your Mother will always be with us. We shared so many fun times with good food and a bottle of wine of course. We were all looking forward to another summer with her in Elk Ridge. Our love to you and your families especially at this time. We have lost your addresses and phone numbers, so please contact us when you come our way. Ray & Ernie Folks

Dear Danny and Becky, There are no words enough for what you are feeling, I'm sure. But I do want you to know we are thinking of you and yours during this time even though we can't be there... I know Mom and Ortence are telling all those crazy stories together like Lucy and Ethel. I will miss her.

Thank you for sharing your mom with our neighborhood. My children especially will always carry fond memories of the grandma in the "castle-house" that always said Hi to them and had the best Halloween treats on the block. She will be missed greatly.

Danny & Becky, so sorry to hear about your mom. You know she was like a second mother to us kids growing up on Crane Ave. I have many fond memories of her and wish I could be at the service to share them with you. Unfortunately we are out of state for another week but my thoughts will be with you.

Becky & Danny: I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful mom. Ortenica and I became very good friends when we met at our church in Payson several years ago. She was a wonderful lady that I grew to love and value her advice. I am going to miss her. If there is anything I can do, please don't hesitate to call.

Ortencia was such a knowledgeable, warm, welcoming presence in the St. Helena Children's Library. My children (now grown adults) and I were very fond of her and respected her greatly. My condolences to the family.
