OSWALD
84, of 28 Matthew Drive, Brunswick, died July 12, 2006, after a long and valiant battle against cancer. He was born in Scuol, Switzerland, April 2, 1922, the son of Otto and Betty Wyler. Educated in Aarau, Switzerland, he was a boy scout and later served as troop leader. He served in the Swiss Army from 1942-1950. He continued his studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich, Switzerland receiving his Masters in Mathematics and Physics in 1947 and his Doctorate in Mathematics in 1950. He moved to Chicago in 1950 to continue his postdoctoral study at the University of Chicago and instruct at Northwestern University. From 1953-1965 he was a professor at the University of New Mexico. In 1965 he moved to Pittsburgh, PA, to become a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He retired in 1992 as Professor Emeritus but continued his research and advising doctoral candidates until recently. He was an amateur botanist with a particular love for wild flowers and orchids. He was a member of Sixth Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh for 35 years where he served as Elder and Clerk of Session. He joined the First Parish Church in 2000 upon moving to Brunswick. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret; his daughters Maya of Portland, Sylvia and her son Cole Faulkner of Brunswick; his son and daughter-in-law, Marcus and Tiffany of Washington DC; and three sisters and their families living in Europe. Funeral Services will be held at the First Parish Church, on Maine Street in Brunswick on Monday, July 17th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Oswald's memory to the American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240; 800-227-2345.
