Otto SPIKA Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald on Jan. 4, 2014.
SPIKA, Otto
Otto V. Spika, 86 years old of Calgary, Alberta, died on December 26, 2013. He was born in Vienna, Austria on January 2, 1927 to Julius and Berta Spika.
After WWII, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and in 1953 immigrated to Canada. He wrote the Alberta medical exams and established his practice in Calgary's Marda Loop area on 33 Avenue S.W. where he served his patients for the next 40 years.
He met his first wife Inge in the elevator at the Holy Cross Hospital. They married in 1955, lived in the Killarney area and had three children, Eric, Vera, and Doris, who now all live in Vancouver. Inge and he parted in the late 1960's but he continued to be a very involved and caring father, exposing his children to many different activities, sports, hobbies, travel experiences, and intellectual pursuits.
In the early 1970's he moved to his current residence in Mount Royal with his second wife Trudy Mertl. She eventually moved to and continues to reside in Victoria, B.C.
In 1987, on a tour to Russia, Otto met Rosemary Turner who became his partner for the next 22 years until her death in 2009 at the age of 84. They lived an active life of traveling, visiting friends and family, and pursuing their various interests. They had fun.
Otto loved the outdoors, hiking, fishing, and touring in his Volkswagen van in Canada and the US, favoring places in Alberta and B.C. An excellent skier, Otto enjoyed the slopes well into his 70's. He was a voracious reader and every month or so sent his children "a bundle" of news clippings and special interest stories, with sections highlighted for fast reading. He studied everything - current events, culture, history, religion, geology, nature, science, technology, cooking, classical music, business and investment, to name a few. Learning how things were built was a passion of his and he often went to construction sites and talked to trades people about their work; for instance, he watched the demolition of his office block on 33 Avenue S.W. and followed the construction of the building that replaced it. A good cook, he enjoyed preparing full course meals, including his signature goulash dish, for friends and family.
He was a solid, down to earth, no fuss person, and a forever-curious voyager of this planet. His insatiable appetite to educate himself in just about anything along with his ability to retain and share his knowledge with others made him a highly interesting, thought provoking individual. His love of travel took him around the world from the museums of London to the jungles of Borneo. He enjoyed all peoples and cultures, their past and present civilizations, geography, and way of life. From Rococo and Baroque churches in Europe to Teepees and Powwows in Alberta that he was invited to by First Nations people, he was fascinated by and enjoyed it all.
He died in a house fire at his home on the morning of December 26, 2013. He incurred no injuries from the flames but succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. He died peacefully and painlessly in hospital wearing his beloved teal green track suit. We will miss our father the rest of our lives.
He always spoke lovingly of his family in Vienna, including his niece Elizabeth, who predeceased him. In addition his children, he is survived by his sister and brother-in- law, Herta and Fritz Seehof; nephew, Stefan Seehof; and his second niece, Irma Jacob and her husband and son, Alfons and Maximilian.
Eric, Vera, and Doris Spika are very grateful to our lifetime friend, Iris Chomyn and many of Otto's friends, especially Liana Obuck for their support and help during this time.
On Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 1:30 p.m., there will be a Celebration of Life for his friends and former patients the Austrian Canadian Cultural Centre, 3112 - 11 Street N.E., Calgary. If you plan to attend please RSVP to [email protected].
If you wish to make a donation, please send it to either the Heart & Stroke Foundation (for which Otto canvased) or the SOS Children's Fund of Canada. Either would put a smile on Otto's face.

Hi Doris. I was very saddened to hear of your loss. Your father was our family doctor since the sixties and we remember him dearly.

I'm sorry I missed the funeral, as I heard about it too late. It would have been nice to see you again. I hope you remember me. We did freestyle skiing together in the late seventies. Feel free to touch base with me at 587-717-0546. You can also leave a message with my sister Christl at 403-402-6700.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Your freestyle friend,

Clint.

Dear Spika family,

It was with much sadness to learn of the passing of your father Dr. Spika. My family and I wish to express our condolences and let you know our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
I became friends with Vera in the summer of 1975 when we both attended the YMCA Wilderness One summer programme based at Camp Chief Hector at Morley, Alberta.
It was a extremely challenging course and Vera was one of the few female mountaineers to participate and excel. We became great friends and I has the pleasure of meeting Doris and Vera's family, and being a guest in their home.

Again, our thoughts are with you.

Best Regards

Otto was one of the most interesting, intelligent and memorable people that I had the pleasure of getting to know. He made an important contribution with his years of service to the community, and was an admirable doctor and citizen in all ways. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and relieved to hear that at least it was relatively quick and painless for him, given the circumstances. R.I.P. Otto, knowing you did your job and your life well - time to leave the burdens for others.

Otto gave my first job as a newly minted physician for 5 months in 1983 when he went on one of his prolonged journeys. A powerful lesson I learned from him was the importance of communication with the patients, as most of his were also his friends. He had a great zest for life, and never lost it! I remember several fascinating dinners at his home with good company and full display of some of his eccentricities. I also stayed with his wonderful sister Herta and husband Fritz in Vienna after his introduction. My condolences to all of the family. I'm sad in that I met him at the bank before Christmas and we planned to get together for lunch early in the new year. Never put things off!

My sister Loretta and I offer our deepest condolences on the passing of your father. He will be remembered as a man with an unceasing quest for knowledge in everything and everyone he came in contact with.

Dr. Otto Spika was our family doctor for well over 40 years, basically until he retired. After him, we have not found any doctor up to his stature, not only as a doctor but as a warm human being willing to spend extra time at his office or call you on the phone to reassure and explain the smallest details when needed. He could read your soul, give you samples of medicine necessary for a day or two and encourage you to help yourself get better by reading about your health issues, getting to know the functions of your body long before preventive medicine became the norm. A true humanitarian, he was always willing to help others in need and disapproved of anyone who tried to to take advantage of the health system. He delivered two of our boys, two nephews and a niece and for that reason alone he holds a special place in our hearts. As a family man, he loved to share with great pride the accomplishments of his own children. We thank Spika for sharing his life with his patients through his yearly letters. They taught us to enjoy living life to the fullest. He shared his thoughts, feelings, adventures. A great sign of humility and kinship to his family and friends. He encouraged us to have aspirations, set goals and go for it. No time for depression for him. Our deepest condolences to all his family members. Dr. Spika, we will keep you forever in our hearts and in our prayers. God keep you safe in His loving hands as we were with you. Edoardo, Marcello, Modesto, Ugo and Angelina Orizzonte.

To Eric, Vera, and Doris,
Your amazing father brought my entire family into this world. I remember Dr. Spika at his 33rd ave sw medical office as if it was yesterday. He had this great charm and comforting quality with all his patients, which, was certainly not lost with our Italian mother, and who could forget his almost perfect jet black hair! I somehow know that he was a great father to you, and a very special person to the rest of us. Dr. Otto Spika was truly an amazing human being, the likes of which we do not see often enough in this world. We have all been blessed to have had him in our lives. We will certainly miss him. I will always have very fond memories of Dr. Spika, and I will always have him in my thoughts. Heaven has gained a great one. I tuly hope that you find comfort in these words at this difficult time.

To the Family of Dr. Otto Spika,

My husband and I are very sorry to hear of your father's passing.

My husband's mother, Rena Jones, worked for Dr. Spika for several years in the late 1950's.
I lived in Killarney, just down the street from your father and mother and babysat for all of you - starting with Eric and then Vera and Doris. We had such wonderful times together!

We look forward to meeting you all again to celebrate your marvellous father.

Sincerely,

Helen (Lorincz) and Doug Jones

I was shocked to hear about the incident that took his life on boxing day but he lived a good life even though the last 5 were without his significant other but now they are together and that thought alone can help those he left behind get though this difficult time without him. I was one of his patients up till his retirement and missed the medical help he gave me over those years but just as then we all had to move forward without him then and we will move on once again, my deepest condolences to the rest of his family and even though I will not be there to say goodbye at the service you all will be in my thoughts that day RIP Dr.Spika

It is with sadness that I read about the passing of Doctor Spika. He was our family physician for many years while we lived in Calgary.

Dr. Spika was always willing to extend a hand to help those in need.

My husband (who passed away in 2012) and I presented Otto with a painting from Europe, upon his retirement at age 70.

Dr. Spika will no doubt be missed by very many.

Vanda.
