Parissa Angelopoulos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2024.
Parissa (Paraskevi) Angelopoulos (née Plageanis), January 8, 1937, 87, of E. 103rd street, Manhattan, then the Bronx, and finally Westchester (and she loved them in that order, not so much Westchester--hated the "the sticks" which was anywhere north of NYC). Passed away on October 12, 2024.

A wonderful mother, as a Yiayia, her granddaughters' fierce friend, confidant, and attorney; a loving Thea and Aunt; a funny and supportive cousin; staunch friend; and a sympathetic ear that others were drawn to (sometimes to her chagrin, "why do they speak to me?").

Always an edgy and funny surface at first, but underneath, at heart, an artist, writer, and poet. And always an optimist with a soft well-guarded soul. Ahead of her time and did what it took to raise her boys. Loved Christmas and jazz and Weather (but hated the cold). I miss our 5:30 coffee on the porch--rain, snow, dawn sun, or hurricane.

Preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Plageanes (née Grafakos), her brothers James Plageanis, Charles Plagianes, and Gus Plagenis (infant), nephews George and Anthony Plageanis.

Loved and remembered by her sons, Andrew and George Angelopoulos, her daughter-in-law, Christina Angelopoulos (nee McFadden), and of course, her granddaughters ("my girls"), Rachael and Sophia Angelopoulos, as well as her family, friends, and everyone she touched or made laugh.

My mom at first wondered what to do with boys. She was working two jobs I know now, and was beat, but had two boys a year apart who had to burn off some steam. We were young, 4 or 5, the nearest playground was blocks and blocks away. We lived across the street from a gravelly and sandy and dirt filled lot with tall weeds (it was Summer and we lived in the Bronx). We also had a couple of shovels but no pails. She grabbed a couple of empty coffee cans and took us across the street. She let us wander around and dig and fill and dump the cans (yup, dirt, bottle caps. broken glass, soda can tabs... the works). The weeds were as tall or taller than we were and at some point she let us wander into that "forest." What I recall is seeing the weeds eye height and chasing grasshoppers that jumped when we got near. We did that a few times if I recall correctly. But even if it was the one afternoon, even today, whenever I walk into or near a lot with a clump of weeds somewhere or anywhere where that had a been a building, I look for Grasshoppers and wonder why there aren't any. It seems that we got lucky that Summer.

Her humor in telling the stories of her life will forever be a part of my memory. She was lovely. She was loved. A strong embrace to those who were closest to her.

A stern woman in church shushed one of Parissa's granddaughters during a service. Little Sophia was about 2 and barely making any noise. Parissa waited for the woman to come back her way after communion, and right in the center aisle, pointed a finger at her and told her to never reprimand a child who was not her own during a church service again. She said that this kind of thing is why kids may not like church!
