Pasquale Iamele Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 1, 2025.

Pasquale F. Iamele passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he was the beloved son of Frank Iamele Sr. and Florence (Marino) Iamele.

Many knew "Pat" from his many years behind the counter at Frank's Paint and Hardware, the family shop his father opened on Congress Avenue in 1954. After his father passed in 1967, Pat, his brother Frank, and "Mom" Iamele kept it going-first on Washington Avenue, then Grand Avenue-until the store closed in 2006 after 52 years of service.

Frank's became more than a business-it was a beloved neighborhood hub. It quietly offered second chances to those down on their luck, shelter to neighbors in hard times, and support to local schools, Girl Scouts, and Little League teams. The coffee pot was always full, and the work table often cleared to make way for Italian treats dropped off by friends and family. It was truly a beloved community treasure.

Pat was a man of quiet strength, endless patience, and boundless creativity. He loved fishing, camping, swimming, and most of all-spending time with those he loved. He had an uncanny eye for color and a magical ability to match paint, no matter how faded or stained. When Pat stepped into the kitchen, his clams casino, zuppa di pesce, and spaghetti with clams were unforgettable. His easygoing nature and dry wit made people feel welcome-and sometimes caught them delightfully off guard.

Pat is survived by his children: Michael S. Iamele and wife Janine, Kristin L. Rockwell and husband Dan, and Matthew F. Iamele. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Lila Ann Rockwell, Melia Grace Iamele, and Ruby Elizabeth Rockwell, and a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Iamele and wife Barbara. Pat was predeceased by his sister, Grace Darling, and former wife, Barbara Ann Trunik.

In his final year, Pat was cared for with extraordinary devotion by his youngest son, Matthew, who made the courageous decision to dedicate himself fully to his father's care. Thanks to Matthew, Pat was able to spend his final year at home, as he wished-surrounded by love, dignity, and peace. The family will be forever grateful to Matthew.

In accordance with his wishes, Pasquale donated his body to Yale School of Medicine as an anatomical gift. As a result, there will be no formal funeral or wake.

I just learned of Pat's passing. He was a good friend. As an outsider looking in, I saw Pat as one of the pillars of the Iamele family; alongside Frank, "Mom" and Grace. What a great family! They took over the paint/hardware business after Frank Sr. died and together, they carried forward the legacy of the paint and hardware business elevating it to new heights in New Haven. Innovative, they computerized early on (remember the Apple II) to help them stay closer to their beloved and faithful customers.

I am a bit miffed in reading the obituary that I did not know he was so talented in the kitchen; especially with white clam sauce over linguine. Regardless, I did get Leon's calamari recipe from Frank (although I have unfortunately forgotten it) and had some of their family picnic's bushels of clams on a half shell so that was a positive. I wish I had known more of Pat's culinary virtues.

May you rest in peace, my friend. Tonight, I will raise a beer in your honor.

I've known Pat for most of my adult life. Our families were friends since I was in my mid teens or earlier. Pat has always been friendly and welcoming to everyone. I'll always remember how hard working he was with endless energy and dedication to his family. I recall going on a couple of fishing trips with him back around 1960. We went out to the New Haven breakwater in his boat moored on the Quinnipiac river by Grand Avenue. We caught lots of flounder and blackfish; what great fun it was. I considered him a life long friend. He will always be remembered with fond memories.
