Patricia Burns Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 31, 2009.
CHATHAM — Patricia (Cabana) Burns, 68, daughter of the late Charles and Cecilia Cabana, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brewster after a long struggle with neurological disease.

A lifelong resident of Springfield and recently of Chatham, Patricia was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her priority was her family and her passion was for teaching. She spent 37 years teaching at Chestnut Junior High School, where she taught English and library science. A 1958 graduate of Cathedral High School, she went on to receive her bachelor's in English from Our Lady of the Elms College in 1962.

She began her professional career as a counselor at The House of Good Shepherd before accepting a teaching position in the English department at Chestnut Junior High School, where she spent 15 years committed to the development and enrichment of young minds with the English language. She went on to become the school's librarian for the remainder of her tenure. In 1998, she received her master's in education with a concentration in library science from Bridgewater State College shortly before retiring.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Burns of Chatham; and two children, son Patrick Burns and his wife Maura of Enfield, Conn., and daughter Dr. Cecilia Moore and her husband Kevin, and their children Colin and Fiona of Chatham; niece Kris Monteith of Plymouth; and nephews Anthony Jajuga of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., and Vincent Jajuga of Charleston, S.C.

Family and friends are invited to gather for the celebration of Patricia's funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Holy Cross Church, 221 Plumtree Road, Springfield. Committal services will follow at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Patricia's memory may be sent to Our Lady of the Elms College, 291 Springfield St., Chicopee, MA 01013.

Dear Mike and Family,
I am sending a great big hug to all of you. Pat, Nancy and I were inseparable throughout our college days. Good ole Brice and Pat got us to college everyday and hiether and yon. I am in California for the month and will not be able to be there physcially for the wake and funeral but my heart and spirit will be with all of you. Pat was a loyal and trusted friend. My mind is filled with many wonderful memories that puts a smile on my face when I think about our years at the Elms.
Love and prayers always,
Mary Lou
