Patricia Ann Damron

Patricia Ann Damron, 84, passed on Sunday, March 21, 2021. Pat was born June 8, 1936, in Saute Ste. Marie, Michigan, the only child of John Elijah Voce and Violet Ruth Whiting. Pat and her father moved to Arizona when she was just a teenager. She was a lifelong horse woman. She acquired her first albino mare, Snow Girl at a very young age, and competed in many horseshows across the state in high school on hunter jumper 'Schoolboy'. As a young adult Pat was a champion barrel racer, frequently square danced on horseback at the San Xavier Mission, and followed the rodeo circuit. Later, she became the owner of the Copper Tower Training Stables, providing horse boarding, student riding lessons, annual Stake-Fry events in the Catalina mountains, as well as loaning horses for several John Wayne movies and other westerns. She and her horse, Witch Doctor led some of her riding students to compete at Madison Square Gardens. Later, she transitioned to training racehorses, earning standings as a top woman trainer at Rillito Racetrack and Prescott Downs, finishing her racing career at Turf Paradise. She was an amazing woman who was loved by many and touched many lives. Pat is survived by her two daughters, Tricia Sammons of Springfield, KY, and Terry Koktavy (Scott) of Tucson, AZ; 4 Grandchildren, Rich (Misha), Ashlee, Zach, and Heather; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Met Pat at Copper Towers when I started riding Sheba who was being boarded there by her owners. With her encouragement I became owner of Roundaround (with whom I had a special connection) and raced him occasionally. Racing at Prescott Downs was especially memorable. Pat's kindness, friendship, hospitality, and equine knowledge was greatly appreciated and valued. Thanks for all the wonderful memories!

I did some work for Pat when she was training race horses at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, AZ. I broke and exercised 2 mare's for Pat that needed extra attention. She then hired me to take a mare to run at Tijuana Race Track, in Mexico. What an adventure and a lifetime experience. I will always love Pat for being so gracious and generous. Rest in Peace! I will see you in heaven.

I worked for Pat as a groom/ponygirl at Rillito Racetrack back in the early '70's when I was in high school. This was my dream job. I bought my horse, Memory, from Pat, and what I learned from her was beyond measure. My memories working for her are some of the best and cherished of my life. She was a great person and an excellent horsewoman.

Hard to believe it has been a year. You never gave up Pat. You chose your own path and you did it in your terms. I know you are at peace now. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

My memories of you are so special and fun. The time we spent together was full of smiles and laughter. I’m so glad we reconnected and got together every time I came to Phoenix. Now you are with all your favorite animals and are at peace. God bless you Pat. Have fun on the other side.
