Patricia Garibay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2022.
Patricia E. Garibay, 82, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2022, in Sunland, California following a lengthy battle with dementia. She was welcomed into the world by her late parents Leo B. and Irene Sanchez on March 20th, 1939, in Silver Lake, California.
Patsy, as most knew her, grew up in a close-knit family in Los Angeles that included her older brother Leo and her baby sister Irene. They loved going on family to trips to Lake Isabella, where her parents purchased a second home. She graduated from Marshall High School and married Anthony Garibay Jr. ("Tony") on July 1, 1961. The young couple were living Corpus Christi, Texas where Tony was serving in the Army when they conceived their first child. Insisting that the child be born a Californian, Patsy flew back to Los Angeles where she welcomed their son Darryl the day after Christmas in 1963. Subsequently they welcomed their daughter Dawn in January, six years later.
Patsy worked for American Greetings for 35 years! She started out as a part-time merchandiser, but quickly worked her way into management. The job was demanding, but as a single mom for much of her life, she was committed to doing her best as a loving parent. Some of her co-workers at American Greetings became like family - in particular, Sharon Hachey. Patsy and Sharon were a dynamic duo who enjoyed over two decades of friendship that made working fun. Outside of work they enjoyed making memories and taking lake trips.
Patsy was a strong and quick-witted woman with a great sense of humor. She had a zest for life and loved her family very much! She was very adventurous, sporty, and loved having fun with her family and friends. Even from an early age she loved hunting and fishing. She loved to water ski, snow ski, and was a fierce racquetball competitor. Many trips to Las Vegas where she enjoyed herself, her kids and the craps table! She was a car enthusiast and had two Ford Thunderbirds and an MG. She loved cooking, barbecuing, camping, going to the Colorado River to water ski, visiting her dad in Lake Isabella and outings to Venice Beach with Dawn.
Holidays were a special time at the Garibay household; Patsy loved getting the family together to make tamales from her grandmother's recipe, play games and enjoy being together. Patsy was a free spirit who loved being a Nana to her three beautiful grandchildren. She had a strong passion for animal rescue and had many loving dogs along the way. Her fur babies were a big part of her life.
Patsy lived in her Eagle Rock residence for over 50 years where the family celebrated countless holidays, birthdays, births, marriages and more. Patsy's family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to their cousin Nic Racanelli, who as a live-in caregiver offered Patsy the peace and serenity to live out her last several years in the privacy of her own home.
Patsy is survived by her two children, Darryl and Dawn Garibay, daughter-in-law Katy, sister Irene Pelarde, sister-in-law Coleen Sanchez and her three grandchildren Tyler, Abigail and William Garibay. She leaves behind a legacy of fun memories with her extended family including nieces, nephews, many cousins, and lifelong friends.
Patsy will be laid to rest in a private burial. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial at the San Fernando Mission Catholic Cemetery in Mission Hills at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2022.
