Patricia Janz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 19 to Dec. 21, 2005.
JANZ _ Patricia Anne (nee Van Tighem) August 22, 1958 - December 14, 2005 After a lengthy illness, Patricia Anne Van Tighem Janz finally found peace on Wednesday, December 14, 2005. She is survived by her beloved and cherished children, Molly, Tobin, Claire, and James. Patricia is lovingly remembered by her mother, Eileen Van Tighem; sisters, Margaret (Michael) Bailey, and Jane Ellen (Greg) Durnie; brothers, Gordon (Carol) Van Tighem, Kevin (Gail) Van Tighem, Michael (Brenda) Van Tighem, Tom Van Tighem, Greg Van Tighem, Bernard (Michelle) Van Tighem; and her children's father, Trevor Janz. She will also be missed by her extended Janz family, who were friends as well as relatives, and her loving nieces and nephews. Patricia was predeceased by her father Jack Van Tighem in 1991, and sister Mary Van Tighem in 1994. Born and raised in Calgary, Patricia graduated from St. Mary's High School and later completed the nursing program at Mount Royal College. In 1989, she received her Bachelor of Science (Nursing) with Distinction from the University of Victoria. Patricia served proudly as a nurse at Calgary's Foothills Hospital. She moved with her family to Nelson B.C. in 1993. Despite requiring multiple surgeries, enduring chronic pain and suffering episodic mental illness, Patricia was an understatedly effective volunteer. She established a Calgary branch of 'About Face', which supports people with facial disfigurement. After the birth of her daughter Claire, Patricia made significant contributions to 'Ups and Downs', a resource for families of children with Down's Syndrome. She recently initiated an information night and support group for Nelson parents addressing the developmental challenges of special needs children. Beyond these endeavours, Patricia gave inspirational public addresses and wrote with brave candor, attracting national and international media attention. Patricia was perhaps best known as an award-winning author, in particular for her novel, 'The Bear's Embrace'. This work began as a therapeutic attempt to deal with the lasting pain, disfigurement and trauma of the grizzly bear attack Patricia survived in 1983; to her humble surprise, the book became a Canadian best-seller. Patricia will be remembered with enduring affection, admiration and respect also for her remarkable kindness, insight and strength of spirit in the face of unending tribulation. Patricia remains a great blessing in the lives of those she touched, including her many, many friends. Her family thanks the legions of compassionate people who cared for and about Patricia for over two decades. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 - 14 Street S.W.) on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 - 14 Street S.W.) on Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.commemorativeservices.ca . In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made in Patricia's memory to a trust fund for her children, c/o 'The Janz - Van Tighem Trust Fund' (Investors Group, 100 - 37 Richard Way S.W. CalgarY, Alberta T3E 7M8). Arrangements in care of COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES FUNERAL DIRECTORS. Telephone: 265-1199. Calgary Family Owned and Operated www.commemorativeservices.ca

I discovered Patricia's book"The Bear's Embrace "while in Banff recently visiting my son who lives there. I was captivated by her story even waking up at 4A.M. to read iot. It saddened me that such a brilliant and inspiring , creative compassionate woman had to succumb to death in 2005. She had suffered so much after the bear attack. I hope her spirit watches over her family.Patricia has touched my soul!

I had met Patricia in the Summer of 2005 at a Garage Sale I was having. She was very kind when her daughter picked out a bright, colorful sweater...and even though it was too big for her, she bought it anyways.
I have just finished reading 'The Bears Embrace' and had a hard time putting it down this past week. Such a touching story...and what pain she had gone through not only during the attack...but for the many years to follow. I hope that she has found the painfree peace that she longed for...and her memory will live on in her writings & her children. Blessings to your family.

My condolences to the Janz - Van Tighem family members. I didn't know Patricia, however, through reading her book I could relate to her struggles and I am so saddened to find that she is no longer on this earthly plane so that I could provide compliments to her. I absolutely believe she was a special woman who accomplished so much in such a short time period. Patricia's soul was beautiful and that is really what matters... thank you Patricia and family for sharing your story. "The Bears Embrace" has had an impact on me, the struggle of being a mom and trying to hold everything together in one's life (and for others). My wish Patricia is for your soul to find a new and wonderful journey in the spirit world. Patricia/Trish, will NEVER be forgotten.

I have just read The Bear's Embrace, and am in awe of the immense challenges that Patricia Van Tighem met and so lucidly, painfully, and beautifully expressed. Her book is eternal, and will continue to inspire and touch others for generations. As the mother of two children with autism who must fight continual battles, both inner and outer, for my sons' well-being (and my own), Patricia's couragous and authentic voice reaches out to me.

i just found out about partricia passing today. i decided to read her book again and i wanted to contact her. then i found out she was dead. i was shocked and saddened. i met patricia in the foothills hospital on unit 21 in 2005. i was a psychotic teenager and she was dealing with her own demons. i had read her book previous to being hospitalized and i recongized her right away. i apporoached her and said that i really enjoyed her book she was really nice and asked if i wanted a signed copy and i said yes. so she gave me one and i was very grateful. she died not long after this meeting but i never knew untill now. that makes my moment with her much more meanging ful i am honored to of met her and have a conversation with such an amazing person. my deepest condolences to all of those she left behind. rest in peace and you will never be forgotten

At St. Marys I remember Patricia as an academic, athletic and very personable young woman who was a delight to teach. My special Patricia memories from those days involve taking her crosscountry skiing to Lake O'Hara and backpacking to Fay Hut.

Following the attack, her struggles to achieve some semblance of normalcy for herself and her family showed an inner strength, commitment and perseverence that was an inspiration to all.

Her premature passing may be rationalised in terms such as the end of pain, the finding of peace ...... but to those for whom she meant so much the heart still aches.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
