PATRICIA MASTERSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 23 to Oct. 27, 2011.
MASTERSON
PATRICIA (GILLIS)
Of Pittsburgh and Ligonier, died peacefully at her home in Shadyside on October 16, only days after celebrating her 89th birthday. Patsy was the wife of the late Charles V. Masterson, Jr. and mother of Charles V. Masterson III and his wife Dr. Carolyn Ellis, of Pittsburgh, and Bruce Masterson and his wife Ellen, of Westborough, MA. She is the grandmother of Clark, Julie and Grace. Patsy and her brother John grew up in the Schenley Farms section of Pittsburgh, the children of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Gillis. Her keen sense of adventure led Patsy to pursue flying and earn a pilot's license while still a teenager. During World War II, Patsy left Rosemont College after being one of 1,800 accepted out of 25,000 volunteers for the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the WASPs. She completed basic training before the program was disbanded. Patsy enjoyed reminiscing about flying the Stearman primary trainer at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas. Patsy worked for Capital Airlines and travelled extensively in Europe and South America. She met her husband on the Shadyside 77C bus in 1959 and they married later that year. Throughout their life together, Patsy and Charlie remained very much in love and devoted to each other and to their two boys. Patsy had many great friends and wanted to pass on her love and best wishes to all of them. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS INC. 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Thursday, October 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation at www.alzfdn.org.

I wish that we had lived next door to Patricia when things were easier for her. Still , she managed to share several good days with us and her memories were clear and fascinating and always made me feel that we had missed out on so many years with a wonderful woman and neighbor. We particularly enjoyed being shown her photo album of her flying days . She was a special lady , and her sons took care of her in a way that emphasized their love and regard that she so richly deserved. She provided her sons and her grandchildren with a lasting legacy of style and strength , and we will miss the Patricia we knew and all of the wonderful aspects of her life that we never got to share.
