Patricia Parsons Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2008.
Patricia W. Parsons, 78, of 104 N. Main St., Towanda, Pa., died Friday afternoon, May 9, 2008, at her home following declining health.

Born Oct. 20, 1929, in Upland, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Anna Hostetler Wiley. She often remarked that her father said the world took one look at her and the stock market fell and the banks closed.

"Pat," as she was known by her family and friends, was a 1947 graduate of Nether Providence High School in Wallingford, Pa., and a 1951 graduate of Bucknell University with a BS degree in commerce and finance. In 1974 she completed studies with Empire Piano School and practiced as a technician from 1975 through 1999.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Towanda — often stating that she had served in every capacity except trustee. She served for many years as a member of the "My Brother's Keepers" group making sleeping bags for the homeless.

Pat was a life member of the Girl Scouts, working in the council, the region, and the local Wypotomoss Service Unit. During the years from 1953 to 2008, she was a leader of troops on all levels except Daisies. She was the last director of the Girl Scout Camp at Brule and the first director of Day Camp at Sugar Creek. She led the revision of the Scouting Room at the Bradford County Historical Society Museum. From September 1991 to September 1997 she teamed with Joy Bourne to produce the museum's quarterly, The Settler.

Pat was instrumental in forming the independent organization for Junior Miss, which became Outstanding Young Woman. She was a participant in the Winding Rivers Players and Valley Chorus. She enjoyed a term on the Towanda School Board and the Board of the Towanda Public Library.

She is survived by a son, Daniel (Ruth Ellen) Parsons of Kissimmee, Fla.; two daughters, Lucy (John) Gambino of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Dr. Edith Parsons and John Miley of Athens, Ga.; a brother, Fred (Barbara) Wiley of Woodlyn, Pa.; a sister, Jane (Jim) Hutchby of Cary, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald S. Parsons, and her grandson Daniel Parsons Jr.

A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 11, at the First United Methodist Church, Main Street, Towanda, with the Rev. Richard Barner, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Memorials may be directed to the building fund of the Towanda Public Library, 104 Main St., Towanda, Pa. 18848, in Patricia W. Parsons' memory.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Parsons. Even though I had not seen her in nearly 25 years, I'll always remember our last conversation. I was home on leave, having just returned from one of my "special" trips, and she gave me great words of insight.

She was a wonderful lady and my thoughts are with her family.

Dan, Edie, and Lucy,

I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was one of the most amazing women I knew growing up. I can't articulate how much she influenced my life. I always looked forward to see her when we came home to Towanda to visit. She always made my family and I so welcome. She will be missed.

I met Pat Parsons in 1979 while competing in what was then the Bradford-Sullivan Junior Miss pageant. Pat was an incredible leader and put her heart and soul into her work. Through her work with Junior Miss and later Outstanding Young Woman, she helped to shape so many young lives and was a role model for so many young women -- including me, when I had the honor of being crowned Junior Miss for 1980 by Pat's daughter, Edie. My deepest sympathies to Edie and the rest of the Parsons family.

To the Parson's family.

We came in contact with Pat Parsons in 1991 as my daughter was participating in the OYW. We applaud Pat Parsons' efforts in developing and mantaining this most important event. Our daughter grew from this experience and it has served her well as she makes her way through life. This was one unique situation that allowed young women an opportunity to challenge themselves and forever remember a personally competitive but also a colleagial experience It was so carefully crafted and produced. Thank you Pat for all your efforts - they live on in many.

Edie,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of your mom, my mom, Mrs. Homet and Mrs. Maskarinec as our girl scout leaders -going to camp and putting on silly skits. Your mom was a gem and will be missed by many. She was such a good person.

For Dan, Edie and Lucy,
I'm so glad that I got to talk to your Mother when she was in the hospital. She sounded so good and we had a nice visit. I'm also glad that I got a chance to talk to Edie and hope that Pat knew that I called. I remember when she first came to Towanda to the Methodist Church Choir with your Dad. Later we both became very active in the Jr. Federated Club. (Yes, we were both YOUNG). I'll miss seeing her when I return to Towanda for a visit, and her Christmas newsletters.

I have known Pat for the last 2 years as the leader of my girls's Browines in Ulster. It has been my honor to have known such a wonderful person. I have had so many great discussions with her. I know that the girls in the troop and those hundreds other that had her as a Scout Leader will miss her.
