Patty, a Buncombe County native, was born September 6, 1942, to the late William Douglas Calloway and Frances Edwards Calloway. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Thomas Eugene Smart and brothers William Calloway, John Calloway, and Richard Calloway.

She is survived by three daughters and their families: Laurie Smart Evans of Greenville, NC; Brenda S. Rhinehart and husband Ronnie, and Susan S. Tedder and husband Neil, of Candler, NC; four grandchildren, Matthew Thomas Rhinehart and wife Tammie of Candler, Whitney Elizabeth Tedder of Castle Rock, CO; Bailey Smart Evans and wife Ashley, and Benjamin Hughes Evans and wife Ashlyn, of Greenville, NC; and five great-grandchildren, Cole Thomas Rhinehart of Candler, Dawson Mac Evans, Sawyer John Evans, Lillian Lee Harmon, and Rosalie Jenks Evans, all of Greenville, NC.

Patty graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School and St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines in Asheville, NC. She and her husband owned and operated Triangle Supermarket and Lake Norman Marina in Denver, NC, prior to returning to Asheville in 1982. Patty then worked as a district sales manager for Western Southern Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1998.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially yearly beach trips which brought her children and grandchildren together. Patty was an accomplished home chef, an artist, and an avid reader.

The family will hold a private celebration of life to honor Patty at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends to consider a memorial gift to the general scholarship fund at Beaufort County Community College, 5337 HWY 264 East, Washington, NC, 27889.
