We celebrate the life of Dr. Patrick Giles Campbell, M.D., who passed Thursday, June 15, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his family, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 19, 2006, 2:30 p.m. at Runge Mortuary. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 until 6 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice, American Cancer Society, or Vera French Mental Health Center.
Patrick was born June 21, 1931, in Sheboygan, Wis., the son of William Seymour and Caroline (O'Neil) Campbell. He united in marriage to Shirley Shewry on August 28, 1957, in Davenport.
Patrick graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1954. He went on to graduate from the University of Iowa, College of Medicine, graduating in 1959, and then completed his psychiatric residency in Iowa City in 1963. From 1964-1969 he was fulltime faculty at the University of Iowa, College of Medicine. He was also a consultant for the Iowa Mental Health Authority. He started his private practice in 1969, and practiced for 33 years before retiring in 2002.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, Scott County Medical Society, American Association Clinical Psychiatrists and the Iowa Psychiatric Society.
Patrick was the President of the Scott County Medical Society from 1981-1982, Chairman of the Mercy Hospital Department of Psychiatry from 1981-1985, President of Medical Staff at Mercy Hospital from 1987-1988 and President of the Iowa Psychiatric Society from 1990-1992.
For relaxation, Patrick enjoyed fishing, bird watching, playing the piano, photography, astronomy, computers, and spending time with his family at home.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Shirley; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathleen and John Dutton, Carrie Campbell and Mike Alderson, and Mary Clare Campbell; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Dr. Mary Campbell, Thomas and Kim Campbell, John Campbell, Gene and Julie Campbell, and Paul Campbell; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and siblings, Margaret Inez-Mosely, R.N., Thomas Allen, M.D., George Edward and Betty Alyce, RSM.
Patrick was preceded in death by his brothers, William Charles, Francis LeRoy, James Bernard, M.D., Jon Julian, Robert Gale, and Neil Joseph, and sisters, Mary Ellen Guth and Jean Laverne.
