Patrick Macnee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2015.
Patrick Macnee, the British-born actor best known as the stylish secret agent John Steed in the 1960s TV series "The Avengers," has died. He was 93.

Macnee died Thursday in Rancho Mirage of natural causes, according to multiple news sources, including CNN.

"The Avengers" had its debut in the United States in 1966 and ran for eight years in syndication.

Macnee's character in the series was partnered with a series of beautiful women who were his sidekicks. The most popular was Diana Rigg, who played junior agent Emma Peel.

Macnee also appeared in "Hamlet", "A Christmas Carol," ''Until They Sail," ''Les Girls," and ''Young Doctors in Love." He also had a notable role in the cult comedy classic "This Is Spinal Tap" as British entrepreneur Sir Denis Eton-Hogg.

His television projects included "Battlestar Galactica" in 1979, an adaptation of "Around the World in 80 Days" in 1989, several made-for-TV movies based on classic Sherlock Holmes tales, and the series "Patrick Macnee’s Ghost Stories" in 1993.

Daniel Patrick Macnee was born Feb. 6, 1922, in London, England to Daniel and Dorothea Mary (Henry) Macnee.

He attended Summer Fields School in Oxford and Eton College in Eton, after which he received his acting training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He performed in repertory theater before serving in the Royal Navy during World War II.

Macnee has been married three times. He has two children, Rupert and Jenny Macnee, from his first marriage. He published a memoir titled "Blind in One Ear: The Avenger Returns" in 1988.

I grew up watching the great man in the Avengers and the New Avengers and as kids it was always an argument as to who would play Mr John Steed.

Sad loss to the acting world but always lives on in his wonderful acting and cool persona.

I grew up watching the indefatigable Mr. steed and Emma Peel. They seemed so genuine, so relaxed in their roles. Funny, campy, and great. Patrick played what I think Americans expected from an Englishman, kind, ex-military but not militaristic, well-educated and impeccably dressed. He will be sorely missed. Godspeed. Bill Cordasco, New Jersey. PS..I am watching Too Many Christmas Trees as I type.

I have recently been watching the Avengers first time around, and I have really enjoyed the series very much. In my opinion he could have easily been oo7 in his hey day. His working relationship with the delightful Emma Peel is quite infectious. To me he came across as a very true and sincere man, who will be sadly missed by fans all over the world. God bless

To Rupert and Jenny, thank you for looking after Patrick in his latter days. My sincere condolences to you on your dad's passing. I only got to meet your dad once at a book signing for his autobiography in New York in 1989 but it was a highlight for me. Your dad brought great joy to me and many others throughout the world in the Avengers. Everyone who worked with him on the show always said what a gentleman he was and how kind and giving he was as an actor. His gentlemanly nature is sorely missed in this day and age but he will always live on in our memories. May the God of Peace comfort you during this time.

We're losing a lot of people from the great eras of television stars. I was not around at the time, but I'm most definitely sure that Mr. Macnee's acting pushed the envelope per say in the action category. He lived a long life and he probably didn't have regrets about being in the business. To his family and friends, now is the time to pray even harder because of losing a loved one. I pray for all of you that you gather the will power to keep on living and to rely on God. He will not go wrong with you. Remember please that Mr. Macnee is in His memory (Luke 20:38).

Deepest sympathy to your family, from someone who enjoyed watching Mr Macnee on tv for a long time. He seemed to put his personality into the character he played - while keeping the character "real". June 27, 2015

My condolences to the entire Macnee family.

The Avengers with Patrick Macnee as the star was the best British import of the 1960s. Although the early episodes could be slowly paced and were focused more on catching murders, robbers, extortionists and the like, the addition of Diana Rigg, a revamped soundtrack and more elaborate villains made The Avengers superior to the typical detective or spy drama.

Although Macnee once said that he didn't particularly care for the Bond movies, he was featured in "A View to a Kill" with Roger Moore, and Avengers costars Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg had prominent roles in "Goldfinger" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", respectively after their times on The Avengers were finished.

R.I.P. Patrick Macnee.

My deepest heart felt condolences to Rupert Jenny and other family members and friends of one of England's finest actors and the perfect example of a "spit-spot Gentleman" Mr. Macnee, with his trade mark smile, hat and umbrella in hand, always classy when solving crimes against the crown. Paired with the svelte Mrs. Emma (Knight) Peel, if John Steed would have been paired up James Bond and Miss Moneypenny, WOW !!! The Fantastic Four of England!!! Mr. Macnee's journey has been long and blessed. May the perpetual light of our Lord, Jesus Christ shine upon him and the fire of that love continue to burn brightly within your hearts and the fine citizens of England.
