Patrick McGoohan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2009.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Patrick McGoohan, an Emmy-winning actor who created and starred in the cult classic television show "The Prisoner," has died. He was 80.

McGoohan died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said Wednesday.

McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama "Columbo," and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart."

But he was best known as the title character Number Six in "The Prisoner," a surreal 1960s British series in which a former spy is held captive in a small village and constantly tries to escape.

Here's to a great actor and writer. I first glimpsed his genius and glib humor as The Scarecrow, and then Secret Agent and finally what he may be remembered most for his brilliant Prisoner. God Bless you Mr. McGoohan. Be Seeing You!

For Patrick...

Now you have begun your
most important journey.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

At the close of 2009, I salute patrick mcgoohan who died earlier this year. He was a rare thing in entertainment. An actor, writer and director with a burning vision of freedom, integrity and responsibility. His best work was in the UK and he & his family should never have left n 1969. But, for everything else, we love him.

Mr. McGoohan, both acted and directed in ABC television's MOW series "Columbo" with Peter Falk. As the Production Designer for the last two of McGoohan's "Columbo" appearances, I found Patrick intelligent, bright, and with a wonderful sense of humor. In our creative areas of association, Patrick picked, digested, and edited every detail involved in the filming process, communicating his ideas explicitly to everyone involved. His directing abilities were astounding working with other actors, especially when he was acting, as well as directing his MOW project. Scripts and scenes have "holes" - or unexplained resolutions in an actor's performance, and/or in a scene or plot development process. Patrick's mind always was active in resolving an actor's dialogue, even with his own words, including emotional levels related with the scene's motivation and actor's behavior and action. He constantly re-wrote both a scene's dialogue or motivation, giving an actor directions to motivate the action or the scene. I have rarely worked with a director who was as quick on his feet, his mind and wits instantly resolving a scene's problem with a solution solving the issue at hand. As a director, one would sense that he was editing as he worked through each set-up. With the Director of Photography, they both knew what he was looking for and what he wanted. He was a terrific communicator with all levels of production. What a talent. I will miss Patrick. Patrick was a very gentle gent!

I was only aware of your passing as of today. It saddens me to hear of your passing. I suppose Bruce Dickinson's band made me aware of the "Prisoner" show back in the early 80's when I was 15 years old. I never viewed it until the internet allowed me to.. When I did I was astounded that such a show was even allowed to be aired! Writing such brilliant content would be amazing even bypassing today's standards! Today we have "Lost" and that holds a spark to your rocket that now launches you to freedom! Cheers my free brother may you never be held down again except perhaps by gravity if there is such a thing where you are now. Not much has changed since you've been gone..

And a killer in the hounds."

Take it easy from the USA..

P.S. - I am LOVING the Brazilian Bombshell.. Especially "Tico Tico" for my kids.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Patrick McGoohan. His personal integrity and professional skill combine to form a lasting legacy. His brilliant insights into the uses and abuses of power revealed in "The Prisoner," and in his more recent roles in "Escape From Alcatraz," "Braveheart," and "A Time to Kill" are timeless in their expression of truth.
Mr. McGoohan's words read at the 1996 memorial service for his actor friend Paul Eddington ("Yes, Minister," and "Yes, Prime Minister") now apply to him: "Where you are now is where you will be giving your best performance. When we get there please tell us one of your jokes. Be seeing you at the big curtain up."
I extend my deep condolences to Mr. McGoohan's family. "The Prisoner" is finally "a free man."

Patrick McGoohan -
Although also appearing over the years in several films, it was his TV work that we'll remember most: in 'Danger Man' (a.k.a. 'Secret Agent'), in the early 60's, then 'The Prisoner' in the late 60s, and subsequently roles on 'Columbo' (4 times as guest villain, most of any actor, with two Emmies, plus director assignments). The man's innate intelligence and strong sense of self constantly emerged in his roles and his influence on actors.

Yet, the one time I got to meet him in person briefly in the late 70's in Toronto he revealed another side. A number (so to speak) who had attended a Seneca College Saturday course on 'The Prisoner', were subsequently invited to be in the select audience for an interview of P.G. by the late Warner Troyer, who had hosted TV Ontario's airing of episodes. After the interview, which apparently is one of the few in depth interviews recorded with P.G. about the show, the audience invitees were allowed to meet him. Some of us were naturally intimidated; but I'll never forget the moment when I energetically stepped forward to meet him and shake his hand, upon which he initially retreated a trace step, as though surprisingly flattered and a little taken aback by the extra attention and air of affection. (An example of people who have given us a great contribution who are yet humbled by overt admiration.)

The DVD set from A & E notes on the cover that 'The Prisoner' is television's first classic. The village of Portmeioron in Wales, where the outdoor scenes were filmed, has hosted for the forty odd years since show first aired a convention of 'Prisoner' fans and addicts. Clearly, the lifeforce of Number Six has maintained its power over time.

Notwithstanding the other contributions Patrick McGoohan made to the performing arts over his lifetime, having been the star and force behind 'The Prisoner' by itself is more than enough reason to pay tribute to this man and his legacy.

'Be seeing you!'

The epitome of cool. When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up and be just like him. I remember how he emphasized that his shows were cerebral yet family oreinted, and that's why he never let them portray sexual innuendo or women as solely sexual objects but as thinking, 3 dimensional creatures. What a fantastic guy who will be solely missed.
