So sorry to hear about Patrick. I wish that I had found out sooner as I would have come. We both went to Holy Name and then on to Central. My dad was the football coach at Powderhorn and several of us played together on the team. Pat was a great guy and always was a pleasue to be around. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Nobody knows the great feat Pat accomplished singlehandedly long ago, except for the few of us who watched him do it. This did not surprise us; We expected it from Pat.
In 1970 Minneapolis Southwest High School won the MN state hockey championship - the only time ever a Minneapolis team won it. During 1970, no team ever scored more than 4 goals against Southwest; only one team had success in scoring 4 goals against them in the State hockey tournament. All other high school teams scored 3 or less goals on Southwest - mostly less.
However, one, and only one person, scored 4 goals on Southwest in 1970 - Pat Rush, our team captain. Pat beat out Lundeen, the top high school hockey defensemen in Minnesota - 4 times in a row on the way to the goalie net. Then, Pat completely faked out Southwest goalie Brad Shelsted at the goal crease - scoring goals 4 times in a row - with Shelsted sprawled flat on the ice 4 times in a row. This great feat of Pat's was explained in the sports section of the Minneapolis newspaper the next day. Today, Shelsted's picture is hanging on the wall inside Mariucci Arena at the University of Minnesota, having been one of the greatest Minnesota Gopher hockey goalies of all time, except for having met Pat at the goal net 4 times in a row.
