I was serving as a Medic in Vietnam when I stumbled upon Paul working inside a bunker in the middle of the fighting operating in extreme conditions saving life and limb as a surgeon serving our 1st Cavalry Division wounded. I'll never forget that single day watching and working with him under horrendous conditions. What people don't remember was Paul's brother John Benien, was killed his first days in Vietnam. Paul was married to my Aunt Mary Ellen Slemaker right after his return from the war.
Combat changed us all and as many remember we didn't get the welcome that today's combat veterans get.
Somehow we survived that time and put our lives together back in the "world". Paul made something of himself in spite of all the awful pain and agony that he tried as hard as he could to prevent.
God speed Uncle Paul! Boomer Sooner!
Praise God for the peace that all our "band of brothers" now have in heaven with HIM.
I love you my brother in arms!
Sincerely,
Rick Slemaker

Frank Shearer here. I grew up next to the Benien Family. This was one Special Family. All three of the Benien Boy’s were very strong Athletes with
Strong Catholic Values. I enjoyed walking to their House to play Basketball & Football. Paul was the Coach of our sixth grade Football Team. We were undefeated. I was a better Swimmer than a Football Player.
The Benien’s set great examples for others. I’m just now seeing
That Dr. Paul has Passed Away. RestIn Peace Dr. Paul. ❤

Paul was a good man and I am thankful to have known him. I learned a lot from him and appreciated his work ethic. Most of all, he was a warm and kind person. These Christ-like traits are not easily found these days

We have lost a wonderful guy. I was two years behind him at Cascia with his brother, John. Paul was always considerate and soft-spoken, an outstanding athlete and a solid citizen.
Rest in peace, Pablo.
