Paul Benien Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2020.

Dr. Paul F. Benien, Jr.
February 17, 1940-November 11, 2020

YUKON
Paul Benien, Jr., 80, of Oklahoma City, finished his course and went to be with the Lord Jesus on November 11, 2020.
Paul was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Dr. Paul F. Benien and Kay Fandel on February 17, 1940. He attended Cascia Hall High School where he excelled as a star athlete and was awarded a full-ride scholarship to play football at The University of Oklahoma. He went on to receive his medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa in 1966, which became one of his greatest passions in life because he lived his life to help other people. Dr. Benien served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War from 1967-1970 and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. He then completed his residency in general surgery at The Dallas/Fort Worth Medical Center by 1974. He also served 2 terms on the Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners after being appointed by Governor Walters and Governor Keaton.
He was known and loved by everyone he met because of his kindness and desire to help others. He lived a full life, was happily married, and loved his family. And yet, through all these things, his motivation for life was his love for the Lord Jesus and considered everything a loss to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus Christ his Lord.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Kay; brother, John; and son, Fred. Paul is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Mary Benien and Nancy Elix of Tulsa, Christy Bell, Charlotte Drabek, and Alanna Peebles of Oklahoma City; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be available on Sunday, November 15th, 11:00 AM-4:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on November 16th at 10:00 AM, 8005 Dorset Dr., Oklahoma City, OK 73120. Graveside burial following service at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery, 7500 W. Britton Rd., Oklahoma City, OK 73132. Arrangments are being made by Mercer-Adams Funeral Home, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany, OK 73008. To share a memory or condolence, visit:

I was serving as a Medic in Vietnam when I stumbled upon Paul working inside a bunker in the middle of the fighting operating in extreme conditions saving life and limb as a surgeon serving our 1st Cavalry Division wounded. I'll never forget that single day watching and working with him under horrendous conditions. What people don't remember was Paul's brother John Benien, was killed his first days in Vietnam. Paul was married to my Aunt Mary Ellen Slemaker right after his return from the war.
Combat changed us all and as many remember we didn't get the welcome that today's combat veterans get.
Somehow we survived that time and put our lives together back in the "world". Paul made something of himself in spite of all the awful pain and agony that he tried as hard as he could to prevent.
God speed Uncle Paul! Boomer Sooner!
Praise God for the peace that all our "band of brothers" now have in heaven with HIM.
I love you my brother in arms!
Sincerely,
Rick Slemaker

Frank Shearer here. I grew up next to the Benien Family. This was one Special Family. All three of the Benien Boy’s were very strong Athletes with
Strong Catholic Values. I enjoyed walking to their House to play Basketball & Football. Paul was the Coach of our sixth grade Football Team. We were undefeated. I was a better Swimmer than a Football Player.
The Benien’s set great examples for others. I’m just now seeing

Paul was a good man and I am thankful to have known him. I learned a lot from him and appreciated his work ethic. Most of all, he was a warm and kind person. These Christ-like traits are not easily found these days

We have lost a wonderful guy. I was two years behind him at Cascia with his brother, John. Paul was always considerate and soft-spoken, an outstanding athlete and a solid citizen.
Rest in peace, Pablo.
