Paul Carrick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2016.
Paul Marshman Carrick passed away at his home in Aptos, CA on Monday, April 4, 2016. He was 89. Paul was born in Lakewood, Ohio on July 18, 1926 to Paul M. Carrick Sr. and Esther Carrick. He has lived in Aptos since 1982. Immediately after Paul finished high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Manila, Philippines for two years. He was honorably discharged from the service and went on to receive his Bachelor's degree at Northwestern University; attended Oberlin College where he met and married the late Martha Ann Nelson. In 1952 Paul contracted polio and was treated in the Polio Recovery Clinic in San Francisco. He suffered from the effects of the disease throughout his life, however, it didn't stop him from obtaining his PhD. in Economics from University of California, Berkeley in 1954. Paul went on to teach at the University of Texas at Austin and San Diego State University. He later worked with Convair, General Dynamics and at General Electric Corporation Research in Santa Barbara for three years. From there he went to the Stanford Research Institute in Palo Alto. Subsequently he taught at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA from 1969 until his retirement in 1991. In his lifetime he had taken great pleasure in camping, swimming, attending the opera, and travelling to Europe, especially Italy. Worsening polio damage eventually confined him to an electric wheel chair restricting his activities. Paul is survived by his wife Patricia Carrick; the children of his first marriage, Sandra Nelson Catlin of Joseph, OR, Laura Ann Carrick of Westford, MA and Paul Marshman Carrick III of Los Gatos, CA; his brother William T. Carrick of Dolan Springs, AZ; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. No Funeral services are to be held at this time. Mehl's Colonial Chapel was entrusted with cremation arrangements.
