Paul CHALIFOUX Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Nov. 8, 2017.
CHALIFOUX, Paul Ajibe
1942 - 2017
With heavy hearts we honour the life and accomplishments of Paul Ajibe Chalifoux. Our hearts are heavy as we cherish the memories of the man who dedicated his life to being a devoted friend, father, and husband. We honour the integrity and collaborative spirit that he brought to everything he did.
Paul was born to Armand and Stella Chalifoux in Morinville, Alberta on April 15, 1942. He was the youngest of five brothers, and he spent his youth playing pick-up sports and enjoying boiled dinners in the kitchen of the Alberta Hotel. In his teens he spent many days enjoying the family cabin at Alberta Beach.
Paul met his future wife Margaret McPhee on a blind date in 1962; they married in 1966 and settled in their beloved St. Albert where they raised four children. Paul pursued a career in education for over 20 years; first as a history teacher, then as the Vice Principal of St. Albert Catholic High School.
Paul spent many years as a minor baseball coach and dedicated community volunteer. He served with the Chamber of Commerce, St. Albert Victim Services, the Rotary Club, and the Sturgeon Hospital Foundation. He was also appointed to the Fairview College Board of Governors, the Alberta Life Insurance Council, the Alberta Municipal Government Board, and the College of Dental Technologists of Alberta.
He was proud to be elected as an Alderman in the City of St. Albert in 1992, fulfilling a long- love of politics that stretched back to his first election campaign, for the federal Liberal party in 1968. He was elected Mayor of St. Albert in 1998 and again in 2004.
Paul was honoured with many accomplishments, awards and accolades over the years; including a Citizen of the Year award he shared with his wife Margaret in 1987, an Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and recognition as a City of St. Albert Community Builder in 2015. Awards and accomplishments aside, Paul left a legacy to his family, friends and beloved city through his love of community and his belief in service before self.
Paul is survived by his children: Rob (Cortney), Michelle, and Dan (Shayla); and his loyal companion Willow.
He was predeceased by his wife Margaret, and son Richard
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:45 a.m., Friday, November 10, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Parish, 75 Poirier Avenue, St. Albert, Alberta.

Our condolences to Robbie and Danny :-(. Our family knew Paul, 'Margie and the kids. I knew Paul via Minor Hockey. I coached the Atom Rep team that included Robbie and my son Ryan and we had many conversations over the years. My wife Carole worked with Paul at St Albert High School for many years. Our daughter Amber played with Michelle as a child. Paul is an easy man to remember, A dymanic man, intelligent, thoughtful and caring, a man who gave "big time" to the community. It's said that outstanding people have one thing in common ... an absolute sense of mission ... "Paul and Margie's mission was destined to give" To Robbie and Danny ... your family has touched this community in so many positive ways and will be remembered with joy and inspiration. The Hanly's

We were so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. How fondly we remember the boys growing up on Burnham Avenue with all of you across the street as such nice neighbors! Paul was a fine gentleman who always remembered your name and took the time to stop, listen and chat. He graced this community in so very many special ways; neighborly, academically, politically and spiritually, just to name a few. May he truly rest in peace. Blessings, The Messengers

I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. It was always a joy to see your Dad and Mom at St. Albert High staff parties, down at the baseball diamonds, at the St. Albert farmer's market or various events in St. Albert. My thoughts and prayers are with your Dad and with all your family as you walk this difficult journey of grief. Peace be with you.

Dear Rob, Michelle, and Dan -
I am so sorry about the loss of your dad. So many years have passed since the ball diamonds in St Albert where both your dad and your mom spent so much time, as well as the community at large. May memories and his legacy be a source of comfort to you all.

Our condolences to the Chalifoux family. I knew and worked with Paul while I was a school trustee in St. Albert. I always enjoyed our conversations and I always admired his dedication to the community.

Dear Chalifoux family, my heart goes out to you during this time. My father, Paul Shelemey, was a colleague of Paul's. May God be with you during this time.

Michelle, Rob, and Dan - I am so very sorry for your loss. I have many great memories of spending time with you guys during childhood visits out west. Your dad and mom were always so warm and welcoming. I'm thankful I was able to reconnect with Uncle Paul two summers ago when we were in Edmonton. He was a kind and gentle person and I know you will miss him dearly.

So sorry to hear of Paul's passing. A great man, he did so much for St. Albert. Both he and his wife Marg did a lot for SAMBA. He will be missed by all.
