Paul Gallagher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1, 2018.
Paul Tudor Gallagher passed away halfway through his 61st trip around the sun on January 18, 2018 after a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer. Paul was born June 16, 1957 in Oxford, Mississippi. Reared in Shreveport, Louisiana, he attended South Highlands Elementary School, Broadmoor Junior High and was a 1975 graduate of C.E. Byrd High School. While at Byrd, he excelled on the tennis and debate teams. He received his undergraduate degree in Business and Public Administration from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1979 and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1982 from the LSU Law Center and received his license to practice law. Upon graduation, he joined and became a partner in the firm of Broadhurst, Brook, Mangham, Hardy, Rolfs and Abadie in Lafayette and Baton Rouge. He later left the firm and had a distinguished career of over 30 years in governmental affairs as a respected lobbyist representing a variety of clients before the Louisiana legislature and regulatory agencies as a sole proprietor and later as counsel for Harris, Deville & Associates in Baton Rouge. He was known by legislators, staff and lobbyists for his incredible knowledge and skillful ability to maneuver through the legislative process where he helped implement many laws relating to a variety of topics including oil and gas, banking, real estate, insurance and general business interests. He was also a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association. Lanky, amiable and up for most anything, Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his closest friends. He also enjoyed placing a wager, whether at the poker table, casino or the racetrack. He had a knack for picking winners, which unfortunately, did not translate as a horse owner. His most successful thoroughbred amassed the majority of its $300,000 in winnings after being sold. Paul is also remembered by his family and friends as a very kind, caring and generous person who had a hard time saying no to any request. He was fun and funny with an unhurried manner. Men liked him, women adored him, and everyone enjoyed his company. Paul is survived by his parents, Judge Andrew and Marilyn Gallagher of Shreveport, his sister, Laura Amberson and her husband, Joe of Dallas, Texas, John Gallagher and his wife, Camille of Baton Rouge and Plano, Texas and Patrick Gallagher and his wife Mary of Shreveport. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Claire and Kace Phillips, Harris Amberson, Davis Gallagher, Whitney Scroggins, and Ethan, Emma and Evan Chamberlain. The Gallagher family would like to extend its appreciation to all the medical professionals at the Baton Rouge Clinic, Baton Rouge General Hospital, Our Lady of the Lake and the Hospice of Baton Rouge with a special thank you to Dr. Emily Cassidy and Glenn Landry of OLOL who helped Paul through this courageous battle. Also to his ""A Team"" of caregivers, who were by his side every moment – Jane Sherman, Randall Womack, Martin Walke, Stephen Ledet, Heather Miller, Charlie Dewitt and John Gallagher. Additionally, a special thanks to the employees of Harris, Deville & Associates for all their support and friendship to Paul during this time and to his many friends who spent time with him and gave him love and companionship throughout his illness. A visitation with Paul's family will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street in Baton Rouge. At Paul's request, a celebration of his life will be held in early spring. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that a memorial donation be made in Paul's name to the Hospice of Baton Rouge.

Paul and I met one another while playing on the tennis team at Byrd. As others have said he was such a nice person and always fun to be around. We didn't keep up after Byrd but I do have fond memories of him and was saddened to learn of his battle with cancer. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers .

Paul was loved by all who knew him, a wonderful, sweet guy. I knew him from early elementary school through our years together at Byrd and LSU, and although I lost contact with him after that, I never forgot him.

So sad to hear this news, but glad his struggle is over. I will never forget when he sent me flowers after Laura's wedding, because of something he had said about me to his grandmother.

He was a good man with a keen insight for what was really happening with legislation and negotiations at the Capitol. He was respected and will be missed.
