PAUL HUDAK

HUDAK, PAUL Paul Hudak, Professor of Computer Science at Yale University for 33 years and Master of Saybrook College since 2009, passed away on April 29, 2015 at Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, CT. with his family by his side. Paul was diagnosed with leukemia and received a stem cell transplant in 2010 to cure it. His death was the result of side effects of his treatments. Paul’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Smilow Cancer Center who cared for him so well throughout this journey. Together with his wife, Cathy Van Dyke, Hudak cultivated a welcoming community in Saybrook College that felt like a home to all. Always an avid sportsman, Paul enjoyed coaching his daughters, Jennifer and Cristina, in soccer and served as president of the Hamden Soccer Association. He founded the Hamden Youth Lacrosse league and coached the Hamden High School’s girl’s lacrosse team for nine years. At Yale he was faculty advisor to the Yale Women’s Lacrosse Team. An accomplished pianist, he formerly played in a jazz quartet, Collectively Speaking, was a faculty advisor to the Yale Jazz Collective, and always enjoyed “jamming” with Yale students and with his family. Hudak, age 62, was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Clark Hudak, Sr and Michelina Hudak, and is survived by his siblings Clark Hudak, Jr, David Hudak, Gregory Hudak, Daniel Hudak, and Elizabeth Hudak, who all still live in the Baltimore area. Hudak graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1973 and went on to receive his MS at MIT and his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Utah in 1982. Paul will be remembered for his kindness, approachability, love of the outdoors and his dedication to family while being a consummate researcher. His love for his wife, daughters, and granddaughter, Aubrey, who was born in January 2015, was immeasurable and will continue to be felt in his absence. He will be greatly missed by many. A memorial service celebrating the life of Paul Hudak will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Battell Chapel, 400 College St. New Haven. Burial will be in Grove St. Cemetery.
