Paul Hudy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 9 to Nov. 11, 2010.
HUDY, Paul Edward July 18, 1923 - November 6, 2010 Paul passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the age of 87 in Calgary, Alberta. Paul was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on July 18, 1923 to Zachary and Mary Hudy. Growing up, Paul was passionate about hockey and tried out for the Melville Nationals, Melville Millionaires, Port Arthur Bearcats eventually playing for the Flin Flon Bombers. Paul worked in Flin Flon and Fort William before enlisting for the Second World War. Due to a hockey injury to his ear, Paul was unable to serve with the Canadian army. He enlisted with the American Airforce where he served as a test pilot until an accident left him hospitalized. Two years later he returned to Saskatchewan to work for North Star Oil. During this time, Paul became involved in both politics and community events and met Emelia Kot and was married June 30, 1951. Paul remained active in public life while working in Winnipeg and Yorkton for Massey Ferguson and Cockshutt Farm Equipment. In 1960, Paul and his family moved to Brandon, Manitoba where he pursued a career in Real Estate, Life Insurance and Politics. It was here that Paul spent the majority of his life dedicated to serving his community. Notably was his founding of the Knights of Columbus Tournament of Champions with minor hockey. He served as an Alderman, Acting City Mayor, Police Commissioner and was involved in bringing the 1979 Winter Games to Brandon. Paul held many positions with the Knights of Columbus, with Grand Knight and The Faithful Navigator as just some of his achievements. He was also actively involved with St. Augustines Roman Catholic Church. Paul had a deep faith and it was a huge source of his strength and solace and always kept his rosary in his pocket. Paul and Mimi retired and moved to Calgary in 1984 where he continued to serve his community taking part in local charity events such as: Heart & Stroke Fund, Inn From the Cold and Food for the Hungry. Now retired, Paul was able to perfect his golf game that he dearly loved. Paul was one of those special people you meet once in a lifetime. His personality was larger than life, had a deep booming voice, always a twinkle in his eye and a great story to tell. He was a man giant in stature and character whose presence was truly felt by those around him. Paul is predeceased by his loving wife, Emelia; parents Zachary and Mary Hudy; sisters Pauline and Helena. He is survived by his son Simon (Marion) Hudy; daughters Susan (Tom) Neufeld and Cathy (Gord) Benstead; grandchildren Ben (Magda) Hudy, Alexis (Carter) Evans, Katy Hudy, Kyla, Andrea Bodley, Paul Ellis, Molly, Mimi Neufeld, Matthew, Erin Benstead. Paul is also survived by his brother Frank (Frances) Hudy of Melville, Saskatchewan; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Norbert) Schultz, Helen Schultz, Lynn Kot and brother-in-law Ron Abel of Weyburn, Saskatchewan and numerous nieces and nephews. My deepest sympathies go out to Paul's family. He was my 3rd cousin. I lived next door to his brother, Frank. I have not seen Paul since I was a young boy in Melville. I believe that he moved away when I was quite young (around 10)

Dear Simon, Marion & Hudy Family,
We are very sorry for your loss. We met Paul at Ben & Magda's wedding and we remember he made everybody laugh with his speech. Last time we saw Paul was at Alexis & Carter's wedding. Paul was able to say few words. We had the honor to meet and to know Paul.
Please accept our deepest condolences.

Paul was a fine example of a Knight. It was an honour to work with him at St Augustine's in Brandon. His family should be very proud of an outstanding man. I will have a Mass offered for the repose of his soul.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the honor of caring for Mr.Hudy while working at the Foothills hospital. I always loved coming to work and visiting with him. He always had a big smile on his face and something nice to say. He will be truly missed.
