SIDNEY _ Paul D. Kohler, 64, of Sidney, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 2, 2008, at his home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
Paul was born May 7, 1943, in Gloversville, to the late Martin and Florence (Castle) Kohler.
He held degrees from St. Lawrence University in Canton and Union College in Schenectady.
He served his country with the United States Army Air Defense Artillery in Korea and was honorably discharged at the rank of captain in 1978.
Paul married Jean Steehler on April 20, 1968, in Rochester.
He was a member and officer of the National Association of Purchasing Managers, and made his career as a certified purchasing manager for 35 years. After retirement, Paul enjoyed his dream job at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Paul was an active community volunteer, serving on The Hospital Foundation and formerly as a board member of The Hospital in Sidney. He was a board member of the Boy Scouts of America Otschodela Council, actively supported Troop 99, and was recognized with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. Paul also founded the Indian Guides in Sidney.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Sidney, where he served as a Trustee and on the Diaconate.
Paul is survived by his wife, Jean; a brother, Charles, and his wife, Nancy, of Williamsville; his two sons, Jeffrey and his wife, Kelsey, of Cambridge and Mark and his wife, Nancy, of East Hampton, Conn.; two beloved grandchildren, Leah and Jensen; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; a niece and three nephews; as well as several aunts and cousins.
Friends may call Wednesday, March 5, 2008. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the First Congregational Church in Sidney, with the Rev. Pat Robinson officiating.
A private burial committal will be held in Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Otschodela Council, Boy Scouts of America, PO Box 1356, Oneonta, NY 13820 and Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820. Arrangements by C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
