Paul McGuigan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 20 to Sep. 25, 2009.
Paul McGuigan, aged 37 and from Innerleithen, died in the early hours of Sunday following a shooting in Baghdad, where he was working as a close protection team leader.

The former Royal Marine Commando (Green Beret) travelled widely before joining ArmorGroup Iraq in 2003 and was serving as a Personal Security Detail (PSD) Team Leader at the time of his death.

A statement released by his family said: "We have been cruelly robbed of a loving, caring family man who had everything to live for."

"Paul doted on his son, aged five, from a previous marriage and was busy preparing for the imminent birth of his baby daughter with his fiancée and her daughter, aged 12.

"We are still struggling to coming to terms with Paul's untimely death, which has left a gaping hole in our lives; he was a fine man, one of the best."

Pay your tributes to Paul in our online book of condolences

Ah God I put this off for so long. Only found out about poor Paul's untimely death from manager in bar. Devastated to say the least. What a fine beautiful funny man he was and a true gentleman. Very sad news as I was the head receptionist in Sachs hotel were Paul and his dad John stayed . Great memories of Paul and that Checky smile. So sorry to all his family his poor mum and sister and his poor children and fiancé.. I am truly heartbroken ❤

Dear Paul

I have such fond memories of you and the fun we all had in Peebles. Before you were a Marine, you were my best friend. I had just moved to Peebles and you took me under your wing and intoduced me to so many people. We would spend hours together just talking about everything and nothing. It had been so long since I saw you but I always got the stories and photos from Corinne she was so, so proud of her boy....
Your legacy lives on in your children and my thoughts and prayers go out to all your family and indeed everyone that knows you. You touch the hearts of everyone you meet and I will never forget you.

Paul - hello sailor!

……your leaving has caused so much pain and grief to all those who loved you and you have left behind so many broken hearts.

Our heartfelt thoughts are especially with Charl and Reece and your Mum, Dad, Mary and Terri.

You have left such a huge void in Reece’s life – he never stops talking about you and it is so difficult not to get choked when he says that you are in ‘heaven’ but he can feel you in his ‘heart’ like Jody!

It is hard not to think back to happier times especially Amalfi and your beautiful wedding – you were both so in love and very happy.

You were full of life and the kids loved it when you and Mark threw them round on the bouncy castle – you were like a ‘big kid’ yourself!

……but our lasting image is of you as a gentle giant beaming from ear to ear as you proudly showed off your baby son. We’ll make sure Charl and Reece are well looked after, as we know you would have done yourself.

PS we’ll also make sure that Reece knows how proud you were of your Scottish roots.....we did try to get you to let Reece wear an England footy shirt once but you were having none of it!

RIP - Lyn, Phil, Daniel and Louise x

After going through my photos of you last night with a few tears I laughed when I remember the fun times out in Dublin me you Tezza and Charl used to have.. Doing knick knacks on the doors at 3 o clock in the morning!!!, meeting my new inlaws while drinking straight bacardi(not our finest moment), you doing your big brother bit when we went to see Cold Play (and being able to get up to the top of the concert because no one would ever try and shove you out of the way!!)
so many good times and great memories of you.
I miss our emails and phone calls and your big hugs and lovely smile.
We will mind everyone for you and Reece will always know what a great and loving Dad he had and Jack will know what a hero his Uncle Paul is.

September 5, 2009

Paul, can't believe you are gone but not forgotton as we see you in Reece, growing from your wee man to a strapping big man like his Daddy. Lots of memories for us to share... my key ones:
1. "The Marine" - meeting you for the first time as you and my little sis came back from Bosnia with HMS Cardiff. The Keanu Reeves lookalike, very dapper in your uniform (and quite skinny!)you'd just turned 21.
2. "Party Guy" - you getting me drunk in Joanna's in Portsmouth, sticking to the floor and dancing to Madness.
3. "Eating like a horse" - your massive dinners on a tray (not a plate!) and we always relied on you to finish of the family BBQ's!
4. "Happy Times" - Amalfi, an amazing wedding location, the kilts went down (and up!) a treat.
5. "Daddy" - the epic 36 hour journey to get you back for the early arrival of Reece, including bunking a lift with the RAF (only you could do it!). You made it with hours to spare, very tired but so proud to see birth of your son.
These are priceless memories that we will always share with Reece.

Rest peacefully Paul.
