MESTERHAZY PAUL MARSHALL MESTERHAZY On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, Paul Marshall Mesterhazy of Washington, DC. Paul was born on February 5, 1971, in Honolulu, Hawaii to Patricia (nee Marshall) and CAPT Andrew Mesterhazy, USN (Ret.). As a military child, he spent his early years living in Aiea, Hawaii, Newport RI, Mechanicsburg, PA and Rota, Spain, until settling with his family in Springfield, Virginia. Paul attended Fairfax County schools. He graduated with honors from R. E. Lee High School in 1989. Paul earned an NROTC scholarship to attend the University of Virginia, while there, he became a lifelong Wahoo fan and captained the Navy Honor Guard. He graduated in 1993 with a BA in Foreign Affairs and on that day his father had the honor to commission Paul as an Ensign, Supply Corps, USN. He reported to the Navy Supply Corps School, Athens GA and upon graduation reported to the USS Nassau, (LHA5) as Disbursing and Hazmat Officer. Paul spent his Navy career on NASSAU, deploying to the Mediterranean in support of US operations in Bosnia and Kosovo, while earning several medals and commendations for his service. Paul decided to change careers and in 1996 entered the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1999. For two years, he served as a Staff Attorney at Kellogg, Huber, Hanson in DC, supporting corporate litigation. In 2002 he joined CACI Inc.-Federal as a Contracts Manager. In 2004, Paul accepted the position of Senior Program Manager at MANTECH International, leading the company's technology and management support programs for DHS Information Assurance/ Infrastructure Protection. Based on his performance on this contract, Paul was selected to be the Chief of Staff of the Assistant Secretary Office of Cybersecurity & Communications, DHS. After serving in several positions of increasing responsibility, Paul was selected to be the Senior Advisor to the Deputy Under Secretary-Cybersecurity, National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD), the position he held until his untimely death this past Tuesday. Paul loved his job and his colleagues at DHS, and was in turn loved and respected as an outstanding government executive. He was an avid reader, lover of music, connoisseur of fine dining, world traveler and most importantly, the beloved Uncle Paul of his niece and Goddaughter Morgan, and nephews Drew and Roman. His grandparents Joseph and Florence Marshall and Edmond and Maria Mesterhazy, predeceased him. In addition to his parents, niece and nephews, Paul leaves behind his husband and soulmate Jeffrey Hinkle, mother-in-law Teresa Jennings, brother Mark (wife Kim and the Konczyk family) numerous relatives, lifelong friends (particularly the UVA NROTC gang, the McCarthy clan, Miles Windsor, the Kegls and Filipiaks), coworkers and anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He will be greatly missed. Godspeed, Paul! I found my old diary in the attic and read a passage about attending a computer camp as a youth in the 80´s. I believe it was a week or two long at Marist College. My roommate was a wonderful kid named Paul Metzerhazy. I wrote, "I consider Paul to be my best friend." This after two weeks as roommates. I remember incredible drawings he did of fantasy characters from Dungeons & Dragons. I believe he drew one for me. We had a joyful friendship for that short time at camp. He was a light. So now in 2024, I searched his name and unfortunately found this page. But from all the comments here, I know I found the right person. Rest in peace Paul.

I would like to express my sincere condolences. I knew Paul briefly at the University of Virginia, as I was a year ahead of him in the Foreign Affairs major. We had a few classes together as undergrads. And then a few years later, our paths crossed again in Washington DC, around the time he was in law school at Catholic U. around 1998-1999, when I had returned to the DC area after graduating from Duke Law. Paul was a good guy. He was someone memorable. I am in shock that he has passed. I am sorry he is gone. I just wanted to send my sincere condolences. Mark Thompson, UVA - 1992.

I remember Paul fondly as we performed in theatre together at Robert E Lee High School. We were so proud to win the Virginia State championship for a one-act play we were in. Paul was a sweetheart and he could make me laugh so hard, he was so clever. My heart goes out to his husband, family and friends during this difficult time.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of Paul. I will always remember Paul with an amazing smile that could light up a room. He was kind, generous, witty, and full of life. We were graced with his attendance at our 25th high school reunion this year, where it was apparent that his will positive look on life and his strength and resilience continued. May Gods peace surround you all now and in the days to come.

Paul was a great guy and good friend to many. I worked with him for 6 years at DHS and can honestly say he was one of the nicest people I have met. He was very dedicated to our programs but also to the people that make those programs happen every day.

To Jeff, the Mesterhazy family and many, many friends of Paul, Our family was blessed to live across the street as Paul and Mark grew up. When mom and dad were out of town and they had parties they would always be up early to make sure no evidence was left! Just a truly amazing family. Next we were blessed as the incredible young man bought the home he grew up in! Paul and his friends brought joy and laughter to our family. When he and Jeff moved downtown the joy left the house across the street. Paul's inner light will shine forever.

I worked with Paul when he first assumed the Chief of Staff position at CS&C. Paul led by example, always working hard and keeping things in perspective. On a personal level, Paul was more than a boss, he was a mentor and a friend. His advice and counsel had an enormous impact on me, as well as many others working at DHS. I am truly grateful to have known him.

I offer my deepest condolences to his family.

I am so sorry to hear about Paul. I was his high school English teacher at Lee, and I remember his intelligence, his smile and his artistic ability. In fact, I have kept one of his drawings all of these years. He became friends with my daughter at UVA and she thought the world of him. He enriched my classroom and all of our lives.

Dear Pat, Andy, Mark, Kim & children, and Jeff,
I am so sorry for your loss. We had such a pleasant lunch last year enjoying the sunshine and sound views and Paul's great smile. He fought so very hard and I know how difficult it is to say good bye. But now he is at peace and pain free.
God bless you all.

To Pat, Andy, Mark, Kimberly, Jeff,

We remember how much fun Kristen & Erik had with Mark and Paul in Spain and the dance Paul & Kristen did in the Christmas show. Although we haven't seen Paul since the time we took the boys with us to tour Washington we know he was a great kid and a great man. He was greatly loved by his family and friends and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. We are so sorry about the loss of such a wonderful son, brother, uncle and partner. Losses are always painful but reminiscing about the good times helps. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

I did not know Paul but through his tributes from family and friends, it is my loss. What an outstanding individual and now he is one of God's angels. May my cousin Pat and her husband Andy know that they were the parents that they were meant to be, to raise this beloved, son, brother and husband. God has chosen one of the best before we would have chosen for him to leave. Bless all of you. Cousin Sharon

To Jeff and Paul's Family,

I was lucky and fortunate to call Paul not only a colleague but a true friend. When I think of the phrase "a scholar and a gentleman" I think of Paul. We would meet for "cyber beers" and he let me (try to) be his "comic relief" during these trying times. There are no words that let me convey to you how exceptional, selfless, and genuinely caring Paul was, all I can say is I am sorry for your loss, the World is a colder place today without his smile in it.

The man of whom I write transcended self and edified others. The man of whom I write edified others and lit up the room. The man of whom I write was extraordinarily intelligent, a gifted communicator, and above all a stalwart friend to all who knew him. The man of whom I write will be missed my many. We loved Paul as much as he loved us. The man of whom I write leaves a great legacy and the “League of Chiefs” will forever remember the great smile. I will miss the man of whom I write. We will forever remember your smile and legacy, Paul. May you now rest, dear friend.

Through the DHS mentoring program, Paul and I were assigned as mentor/mentee. Even though it was a formal program, it was apparent that Paul took a genuine interest in my development. He was a very warm and engaging person. Paul is the kind of person who makes the workplace a worthwhile experience.

To Jeff and Paul's family and friends-

Paul was a truly remarkable man. I had the pleasure of knowing him as both a patient and friend for over ten years. He was always a gentleman with a kind word for everyone. It is an honor that he trusted me with his medical care. He was truly a "fighter" and always had an attitude about his illness that was remarkable in every way. He will be missed. My condolences to all.
