Joanne Michaud Wegiel
October 9, 2010
Our father Paul Emile Michaud passed away at home October 8th, 2010. Dad was born November the 8th, 1923 in Saint-Pascal, Quebec. As we grew up we heard many stories about his life growing up in rural Quebec during the Depression with his brother and five sisters. These stories include saving a neighbor's life by transporting her across a frozen lake with his dog sled team taking her to emergency medical care He only had a few years of schooling because he worked to help support the family doing a variety of jobs including pulling tree stumps with his ox, After working briefly in a mine, he went north to help build the Alaska Highway. During the second World War Dad volunteered to join the army and took his basic training in Calgary where he met and married our mother Marion Isabella (Thompson). In a span of five years they had four children born in three different provinces and moved thirteen times going wherever he found work. Ready to settle down after returning to Calgary he got a job as a switchman at the CPR where he worked for over thirty years and lived in the same little house in Bowness for over fifty years. Dad lived a very active life, loved the outdoors and passed his love of nature on to all of us. He was always hiking, camping, hunting, cross country skiing, fishing and even continued to canoe in his eighties. Dad was predeceased by his beloved mother Laura (Bonenfant), his father Arthur, his brother Louis, his sisters Marthe Drolet and Therese Sauve, his son Pierre and his wife Marion. He is survived by his sons Allan and Denis, his daughter Joanne Wegiel, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Arrangements will be handled through McInnis and Holloway. Memorial service to be held Monday October 18th 2:00 PM at Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North.
