Paul was born July 16, 1927, in Youngstown, the son of Paul and Frances Murphy. He graduated from Chaney High School in 1945 and entered the U.S. Navy soon before the end of World War II. In the Navy, he served on the USS Rowan in the Pacific. Paul attended Ohio University and received his D.D.S. from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago in 1953. After completing a fellowship at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, he received a master's degree in oral surgery and then completed his oral surgery residency at Kansas City General Hospital. He was honored to serve as President of the Ohio Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and was a member of the Brophy-Logan Surgery Society, affiliated with Loyola University. In 1979, he was gratified to volunteer and serve with the Allied Dental-Medical Mission of Youngstown, when the group travelled to the underdeveloped mountain areas of Peru to give aid and villagers in correct dental health procedures. He relished his time with his large family. He supported them by serving as President of the Canfield HS Athletic Boosters. He loved sailing, skiing, running, and in his later years enjoyed exercise and involvement on his homeowners' board at Siesta Key Beach.
