Paul Portalla Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2025.
Paul Joseph Portalla of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully at home on September 14, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on January 28, 1951, in Revere, Massachusetts, Paul was raised by parents, Joseph and Katherine Portalla. His early years in Revere shaped the foundation of a life marked by dedication, service, and deep personal connections.

After attending Revere High School, Paul heard his calling to join the United States Air Force in 1969 at the age of 18. This began a distinguished military career that spanned 25 years. Rising through the ranks with steadfast commitment and integrity, he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant from Holloman Air Force Base in 1994. Throughout his service, Paul formed enduring friendships that remained meaningful to him throughout his life-bonds forged in shared duty and mutual respect. He often spoke fondly of these relationships and stayed in touch with fellow servicemen until just before his passing. A special thank you to Mac for being among those cherished friends.

Paul's legacy continues through his loving daughter, Teresa Brunson; his son, Eric Portalla; and four adored grandchildren: Taylor, Gage, Makenna, and Noah. He also shared a lasting connection with Yumi, the mother of his two children. In later years, Paul found companionship and love with Debbie, his devoted partner of over 17 years.

A man known for his tough exterior yet deeply kind heart, Paul was admired for his sharp sense of humor and unwavering pride in his military service. His stories-often laced with wit-reflected both the challenges and camaraderie of a life spent in uniform. Those who knew him will remember not only his strength but also the warmth he extended to those close to him.

Paul will be laid to rest at the National Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix-a fitting tribute for a man who dedicated so much of his life to serving his country.

He will be forever missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring comfort and strength to those he leaves behind.

I will always be grateful to Paul for the profound impact he had on my life and career. Paul was more than a colleague-he was a trusted mentor who believed in me even before I fully believed in myself. His guidance and encouragement gave many the confidence to grow as both a professional and a person. Paul was a great leader who worked hard, played hard, and inspired those around him to do the same. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of leadership, hard work, and mentorship will live on in all of us who had the privilege of learning from him.
