Steingard, Paul M., D.O.
87, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 27. Dr. Steingard was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 12, 1929 to Charles and Rose Steingard. He was a proud graduate of Penn State University and earned his D.O. at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After practicing in Philadelphia, the family moved to Phoenix in 1962 and Dr. Steingard began a distinguished, 57 year career in sports and family medicine. Along with two other physicians, Dr. Steingard co-founded Sports Medicine as a medical speciality in 1969 and is widely credited for bringing national attention to the field. Alongside a successful private practice, he was the first team physician for the Phoenix Suns and later the Physician Emeritus. He also served as the team doctor for the Phoenix Roadrunners, the 1984 Kenyan Olympic team, Grand Canyon University, Phoenix College and numerous Phoenix-area high schools. A staunch advocate for his community, charitable work played a significant role in Dr. Steingard's life. His volunteerism linked his medical knowledge with a ceaseless passion for progress. He founded Team of Physicians for Students (TOPS) - a nonprofit that provides free comprehensive physicals for high school athletes. Dr. Steingard served for three terms as president of the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery during his 10-year term. He also served on the boards of TOPS, the National Football Foundation - Valley of the Sun chapter, the Grand Canyon State Games and Midwestern University. He was the medical advisor for the Phoenix Union and Glendale Union High School Districts and established one of the first fellowship programs for Sports Medicine. His professional and charitable accomplishments were recognized many times over. He was the recipient of the Dr. John H. Clark Leadership Award, the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association's 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2004 Physician of the Year, the Hon Kachina Volunteer Award, the National Football Foundation's Distinguished Arizonan award, the Fiesta Bowl's 2003-2004 Volunteer of the Year award and more. Dr. Steingard was known amongst his family and friends for his love of sports, jazz and great food. He was always ready with a recommendation, be it for a good book, an old movie, or if you were traveling to a new city, the best restaurant in town. Dr. Steingard had a voracious appetite for knowledge and a genuine love of learning which he tirelessly worked to instill in those he knew.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his brother Dr. Joseph Steingard (Bernice), his four children Nancy Steingard (Dr. Norman Solomon), Dr. Michael Steingart (Dr. Livia Spitz Steingart), Richard Steingard (Dr. Amy Horton) and Dr. Scott Steingard (Dr. Sharon Steingard) and his 11 grandchildren. Services will be held at Mount Sinai Cemetery on Thursday, March 2nd at 2:00p.m. The address of the cemetery is 6602 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dr. Steingard's honor to TOPS or Arizona Osteopathic Charities.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Steingard's passing. He was a wonderful man. I was in the Cooperative Office Education Program at Paradise Valley High School and he provided me with my first "office" experience (1976-1977). He was a very kind, warm and caring individual and it was a wonderful experience. My job was to transition all of the files to a color coded system. The staff (both front and back office) were amazing and very happy - which is not surprising as it was a wonderful place to work. I met Jesse Owens & some Phoenix Suns players who were all kind enough to give me signed personal messages. For birthdays there was always a Jamoca Almond Fudge Ice Cream cake from Baskin Robbins and to this day, it is one of my favorite ice creams. My time with Dr. Steingard had a huge, positive impact on me and I treasure those memories to this day. You are missed. Patty Schultheis (nee Gardiner).

Dr. Paul was a mentor to me during my premedical years and while attending medical school at Midwestern. He was kind personally and a role model professionally. I am thankful to have had the chance to learn from him. He will always be an inspiration in my career as an Osteopathic Physician.

Scott,

My condolences to you and yours on the loss of your father. Wish I'd had the chance to meet him. What an incredible individual (and role model) he obviously was!

I was a friend of yours back in your Madison Meadows days. Your supportiveness and friendship won't ever be forgotten.

I noticed that your father and mine (1929-2012) were born in the same year.

My thoughts are with you and your family on your loss, Scott.

I always think fondly of Paul, as a trusted colleague who kept up the good fight for medicine in the Valley. He was a powerful force for the osteopathic profession for many years, and I recall he could instill confidence in many of those around him (including me!). My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

When I was a young doctor, arriving in Phoenix in 1969, Paul took me under his wing, introducing me to people and getting me coverage jobs while I was waiting for my office to be completed. He remained a friend and mentor for years, and I will miss him.
I offer my condolences to Dr. Steingards's family.
