Paul Shepherd VanDyke II

August 2, 1922 - November 2, 2017

Paul S. Van Dyke II, 95, of Bryan, went to meet his Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 2, 2017 in Bryan. We will gather to honor his life at 1pm on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan.

Paul was born to Rev. Paul Shepherd Van Dyke and Louise Carleton Estes Van Dyke on August 2, 1922 in Karuizawa, Japan, where his father was serving as a Presbyterian missionary. The family established roots in Kerrville, Texas in the 1930s, and Paul graduated from Tivy High in 1940. During WWII, Paul enlisted in the Coast Guard; he saw action in the South Pacific aboard the LST 207 while serving as a Pharmacist's Mate 3c. Paul spent his professional life as a science teacher and as a counseling psychologist. He earned a B.A from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri in 1949. In the 1950s, Paul taught biology at St. John's school in Houston. He earned an M.A. in counseling and secondary education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1953 and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1965. During the 1960s and 70s, Paul taught psychology in Kirksville, Missouri; Seguin, Texas; and McPherson, Kansas; and he practiced as a counseling psychologist in Marion, Indiana. Throughout his life, Paul was a faithful steward of God's creation. He was an avid bird-watcher, hiker, gardener, Bible scholar, and environmentalist.

Paul married Marguerite M. Hotz in San Antonio on August 29, 1960, and they enjoyed 57 happy years together. Paul Van Dyke is preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters Maud Jennings and Rebecca McCall. His survivors include his wife Marguerite Van Dyke; sister Louise Rauch; brother Estes Van Dyke; daughter Ruth Van Dyke (Randall McGuire); son David VanDyke (Paula); grandchildren Christopher (Jessica), Caitlin, and Casey VanDyke; and great-granddaughter Karsyn VanDyke.
