Paul Wozniak Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2011.
Paul WOZNIAK 1956 ~ 2011 Paul Wozniak, beloved husband of Diane and father of Hayley, Hanna and Christopher, died suddenly in Seattle on June 21, 2011. Paul was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Arthur and Eleanor Wozniak on January 24, 1956. Paul grew up between dairy farms and urban parks, fascinated by the way cities and communities were designed to create a sense of purpose, belonging, community and home. He met his wife, Diane, while completing a degree in planning and environmental studies. They fell in love and realized their shared dream of moving to Seattle in 1978. Paul bicycled, canoed, hiked and explored the beauty of their new chosen home while completing a master's degree in geography and urban planning at the University of Washington. For 32 years he loved seeing the resulting applications of his work: saving salmon streams, planning the first Microsoft campus, mapping out linked bicycle trails , and being a part of the evolving growth of his chosen home. Paul married Diane in 1984 and in his family life he loved coaching soccer for small beginners and being a loyal supporter on the sidelines of his three childrens' athletic fields as they participated in soccer, baseball, softball, cross country and track. Paul, whenever asked how he was, unfailingly responded: "Never better!" He welcomed each day as a chance to volunteer and be of service somewhere, for church or schools or the broader community. In his parents' tradition, he especially enjoyed barbecues and catered events to celebrate special events or simple togetherness. A highlight was his six-year food prep for the Washington Middle School and Garfield High School auctions. With professional chefs and fellow parents Thierry Rautureau of Rover's and John Platt of St. Cloud's, he delighted in this successful annual fundraiser for students. Paul was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves behind his wife and three children, many in-laws, nieces, and nephews, and countless friends in Magnolia and beyond. We will have a service and reception in his honor on Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension, 2330 Viewmont Way West, in Seattle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any hunger/feeding program or another charity of your choice.

I first met Paul just after my first daughter was born, and what was always beautifully clear was the love he had for his three children. He had a soft warmth and a quiet wisdom to him that made him a pleasure to be around. He will be missed dearly by all.

The Paul I knew the best was Paul the volunteer - always there at school and sports events. It was great to see him outdoors at Garfield cross-country meets and helping in the kitchen at the Garfield auction dinner. What a wonderful model of generosity for our kids. We will miss his quiet smile and helping hand.

What stands out for me about Paul is his generosity. He could often be found helping at school and community events, and usually behind the scenes -- a reflection of his modest, unassuming way. The large gathering of friends and neighbors who honored him today represented the many overlapping circles of communities and individuals that he touched. Personally, I will miss his friendly smile, his easygoing manner, and the conversations we had over the years about our children's lives. He always helped to put things in perspective.

Sweet Diane and Family... With joy I recall talking with Paul at the grocery store, seeing you out walking, the warmth of his smile and generosity of his spirit that infected all who interacted with him.

My heart sank when I heard the news of Paul's passing and remember that feeling well. Having taught Hayley, Hanna, and Chris I was able to really get to know the Wozniaks and you couldn't help but love this family. They truly are one of my all time favorite families that has come through our school. Even after the kids were long gone from elementary school, I would still run into Paul and Diane at social events and it was always a treat for me to see them as they always had smiles on their faces and were always in great spirits. Paul was just a teddy bear who had nothing to give but love and warmth to others. He truly was a gentle soul and will be missed. My heart and prayers are with the family and I hope they know I'm sending my love and hugs to them.

I remember visiting Hayley or Hanna and we would always end up spending time with the rest of the family because they were such good company. I often got lost trying to leave their house so Paul, even at midnight, would jump in his car and have me follow him as he lead the way to the freeway. Paul was such an amazing, caring, nurturing person that I'm sure every person he has every met he has touched their heart in some positive way.

I will always remember a smiling Paul bounding around the grounds of N Sid Sen, often with Chris on his back! His joy was infectious, and his love and care for the beautiful and amazing Hanna, Hayley, Chris and Diane was palpable. All of us in the Whitlock/Baker family will miss him greatly.

Paul has been a long time family friend of ours. I also was good friends with his daughter Hanna. I remember how he always seemed to have a "never-give-up" attitude to life. I hope his family the best in this tough time.

I also worked with Paul at Odelia for quite a few years. He was such a kind and gentle man, with a smile always on his face. He tought me how to do my job and was always so great to talk to. Paul never complained, always offered his advice and I truly considered him a friend. I hope he is now 100% "never better." We love you Paul! You will be missed....

I worked with Paul at Odelia Pacific for a few years. He was always so nice to me and brought his smile and nice nature to work with him every day. Whenever I needed help, he would always lend me a helping hand; and smiled while doing it. Paul will be missed. My condolences to his wife and kids. He spoke so highly of his family and loved you all very dearly.

I went to grade school through high school with Paul in Oak Creek, WI. I have very fond memories of him in school and last spoke with him at a class reunion a long time ago. He was extremely happy and told me how much he loved his wife and his job in the Seattle area. My thoughts and prayers go out to Diane and the rest of his family. May God give you peace and the joy of a million wonderful memories.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Diane, Haley, Hanna and Chris. Paul touched many people with his kindness and soft spoken support. We so enjoyed being with him and all of you at soccer and running events. Preparing the auction food was fun with him! Dave, Phoebe and Sean.
