Pecola D. Givens

Pecola D. Givens died in Eureka on November 21, 2008, at the age of 85. Pecola was born in Valverda, Louisiana, on March 14, 1923, one of 4 children. She grew up and resided in Louisiana until she and her husband, Lawrence, moved to Tacoma, Washington. Then, in 1952, Pecola and Lawrence relocated and settled in Eureka. Together they build a happy and solid life. Pecola was self-employed, taking on numerous jobs simultaneously. She was also co-owner o Larry’s Detail Shop with her husband.

Pecola was a member of Grace Baptist Church for over 40 years. She loved working in her flower garden and canning her preserves, especially pears and plum jelly. She was always known to have a jar or two waiting to share.

Pecola was a strong, proud and independent woman and will always be remembered as such.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Powell (AV) of Eureka; grandchildren, Betty (Bill) Herrera, Linda Menniweathers (Charles Claybon), Jackie Watts all of Eureka, Cheryl Tatmon (Jim Van Epps) of Grand Forks, North Dakota; great-grandchildren, Alliah Watts, Diaja Freitas, Tiffany (Shane) Taylor, Reggie Menniweathers, Tynesse Menniweathers, Erynn Menniweathers, Megan Reis and Breanna Tatmon; great-great-grandchildren, “Lil” Shane Taylor, Fancy Taylor, Odella Cook, Beautiful West, Nevaeh West, Janelle Menniweathers, Derrick Menniweathers, Duante Menniweathers and DeAndre Menniweathers. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Pearl Davis of Eureka; nieces, Yvonne (Carlos) Porter of Santa Rosa and Samantha Ell of Oakland; nephews, Hiram Davis (Kelly) of Eureka, Albert Davis of Sacramento, Albert Ell Jr. (Nicole) of Modesto, Larry Williams (Sheila) and Joseph Williams all of New Orleans, Louisiana; cousin, Roberta Blanchard of Maringoui, Louisiana and numerous other relatives; and by special friends, Stan and Nancy, General “Red” Thompson, Dorothy Taylor and Bill Davis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Edna David; husband, Lawrence Givens; brother, Daniel Davis; sisters, Virginia Williams and Edwina Davis; and sons-in-law, Todd Watts and Odell “Skip” Menniweathers, Jr.

Visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street, Eureka, on Monday December 1, 2008, from noon to 5 p.m. Friends and family are invited to the funeral service at Grace Baptist Church, 220 Buhne Street, Eureka, on Tuesday December 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kyle Decker and Pastor GL Upshaw officiating. Casket bearers will be AV Powell, General “Red” Thompson, Bill Davis, Wayne Crosby, Richard Muse and Walt Stevens. Honorary bearer will be Pervis Alexander. A potluck reception will immediately follow the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Humboldt, Inc., 2010 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501.

Shirley and AV,

Dear Shirley and A.V.,
Celest and I are sorry to hear of the passing of Shirley's mother. Though I don't recall meeting Pecola, the photograph in the paper certainly suggests whence Shirley obtained her stature and beauty. Our best wishees to you.
