Penny Johnson

Penny Anne Johnson (née Deutsch), born on February 10, 1943, in Columbia City, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, in Boone, North Carolina. She was 82 years old.

Penny was the daughter of Hazel M. Deutsch and W. Virgil Deutsch. Her early years in Indiana laid the foundation for a life filled with adventure, resilience, and deep appreciation for the world around her.

She married William S. Johnson, a dedicated member of the military, and together they embraced a life of service and exploration. As a military wife, Penny lived in Guam, Japan, and Hawaii-experiences she cherished deeply. These travels allowed her to immerse herself in diverse cultures and landscapes, shaping her worldview and enriching her life with unforgettable memories.

After settling in North Carolina, Penny found joy in the natural beauty of the region. She especially loved taking scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway and visiting national parks. Nature brought her peace and inspiration throughout her later years.

Penny was also known for her unique passion: collecting Santas. Her home became a festive wonderland each Christmas season, adorned with an ever-growing collection that delighted friends and visitors alike. It became a beloved tradition for friends to ask with a smile, "How many Santas do you have now?" Her holiday spirit was infectious and brought warmth to all who knew her.



She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, an international noncollegiate sorority with a focus on social, community service and the development of cultural appreciation. Penny was also a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a U.S. based international women's organization providing six levels of educational opportunities for women worldwide. She and her daughter are proud of belonging to these organizations that empower women.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie L. Ostermeyer of Boone, North Carolina.

Penny was preceded in death by her beloved husband William S. Johnson, who passed away on September 11, 2010; her son Stanley J. Ostermeyer, who was killed on March 11, 2017; her parents Hazel M. Deutsch (died November 15, 1992) and W. Virgil Deutsch (died July 16, 1988); as well as her sister, Sally Schomburg (died October 13, 2007).

May Penny's memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 11, 2025, at 02:00 PM at Boone United Methodist Church at 471 New Market Blvd. in Boone, North Carolina.
