Pete Stubbs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 2 to Oct. 4, 2008.
Sept. 14, 1936 — Sept. 27, 2008

Pete Stubbs, 72, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 27, 2008. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 30 at Homestead Baptist Church, with Dr. Brian Smith officiating. Burial was in Crossville City Cemetery.

Mr. Stubbs was born Sept. 14, 1936, in Anderson County, the son of Samuel Pete and Edna Duncan Stubbs.

He owned and operated Stubbs Barber Shop before becoming Cumberland County Clerk in which he served for 28 years. In the more than 50 years Mr. Stubbs spent on Main St. as barber and clerk, he became one of the most respected and beloved men in the county.

If you lived in Cumberland County for any length of time, you came to know Pete on a personal level. It might be that in the earlier years you stopped in the barbershop for a trim and later you might have bought your license tags or received your marriage license from him. It's a sure bet that more marriages were performed in his office with him officiating than were performed in the churches in the area.

He was a great friend to everyone and his unique sense of humor was something that will never be forgotten. He also served in the National Guard and was a member of Homestead Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Calahan Stubbs of Crossville; mother, Edna Stubbs of Crossville; son, Samuel Pete Stubbs of Crossville; daughter, Sabra Stuermer and husband Paul of Cleveland; brothers, Dr. Sam E. Stubbs of Rochester, MN and Lonas Stubbs of Chicago, IL; sister, Ella Turner of Crossville; and grandchildren, Hunter York, Houston York and Haden Pete York.

Pallbearers were Larry Calahan, Tommy Calahan, Larry Taylor, Mike Stubbs, James Smith and Mike Graham.

Hood Funeral Home and Crematory, LLC (www.hoodfuneralhome.com) was in charge of the arrangements.

To the enitre Stubbs family:

I am so sorry for your loss. I still have a picture of Pete cutting my hair when I was 7 in that very last chair of his at the shop. What a wonderful, friendly, family and christian man Pete was. Your entire family is in our prayers.

Pete gave me my first hair cut sometime around 1954. He was among the best persons I have been acquainted with. Certainly, he will be missed by many.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Even though I don't live in Crossville anymore, Mr. Stubbs was one of the constants. You all are in my thoughts and prayers
