Peter Briggs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2007.
MATTAPOISETT — Peter Pernas Briggs, 77, of Mattapoisett, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at his home after a long spirited fight with his illness. He was the beloved husband of Ann (Perkins) Briggs and son of the late William Penn Briggs II and Juanita Andrea (Pernas) Briggs.

He traveled throughout the Eastern United States as an employee for the Great American Insurance Company before settling in Mattapoisett where he started Peter P. Briggs Insurance. He taught woodworking at Fairhaven Jr. and Sr. High Schools, volunteered for the Mattapoisett Fire Department, and was a member of the Mattapoisett Historical Society. He was also a member and former deacon of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church. He served in the US Navy Reserve. He was a member of the Mattapoisett Yacht Club where he served as a former commodore and was a member of the Pythagorean Lodge A.F. & A.F. in Marion.

He loved "messing about in boats" both on the water and building them.

He also designed and built furniture in his woodshop. While traveling with his wife he was always fascinated by meeting new people and discovering new places. Above all, he was most content and happy surrounded by family.

He leaves his wife; his son Daniel C. and wife Lori Briggs, daughter Melinda A. and her husband Kevin E. Eaton and daughter Heather J. Hobler. Peter Briggs also leaves his grandchildren, L. Christopher Smith, P. Collin Smith, Graham C. Smith, Doscher M. Hobler and Brandis N. Eaton. Peter also leaves behind his aunt Frances Pernas, brother William Penn Briggs III and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Jane Newman.

His body will be donated to the Harvard Medical School for anatomical research. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Mattapoisett Free Public Library or the Gary Hobler Woodland Trust, P.O. Box 2282 Duxbury, MA 02331. Masonic Service at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, January 1st with a Memorial service following at 11 am.
