Peter Brothers Obituary

On Monday, October 17, 2016, dad peacefully slipped away into the arms of our Heavenly Father. Peter, the patriarch of our family will be deeply missed by his loving family and devoted friends. He will be remembered as a true, Irish gentleman who achieved the American dream. He is survived by his 4 children and their families. Kieran Brothers of Sacramento, CA, Kelly Brothers, his wife Augusta, of Carmichael, CA, daughter, Marie Ospeck and her husband, Matthew, of Danville, CA, and daughter, Margaret Jones and husband, Ted, of Carmichael, CA. Pete was a loving and proud grandpa to his 13 grandchildren: Brian, Brendan, Jack, and Kate Jones, Liam, Lauren, Ronan, and Bryn Brothers, and Erin, Natalie, Ellie, Charlie, and Joey Ospeck. These kids brought him joy and love on a daily basis. Pete was born and raised in New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland on March 23, 1930 to the late Thomas and Elizabeth Brothers. He was the last surviving sibling of 9 children (Jim, Beatty, Jack, Toddy, Michael, Patrick, Pete, Margaret, and John). While working in Dublin in 1957, Pete's Irish charm paid off when he "swooped in" and convinced a beautiful young nurse, Mary Kelly, to follow him to America. They eventually married on July 15, 1961. Their 4 children were born soon afterwards in San Francisco, where they lived, but a job transfer moved the family to Sacramento where they happily resided for decades. Pete worked for Cal-Western Life Insurance Company, volunteered at his children's schools and, in his later years, became the "Mayor of McKinley Park," enjoying talking to neighbors as he walked his dog. Friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Thursday evening, October 20 at 7pm and a Mass of Christian Burial to be offered for the repose of his soul at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, October 21 at 1pm. Burial will be private. Remembrances may be made in his memory to either the Catholic HIV/AIDS ministry (Fr. John Healy 832 41st Street, Sacramento, CA 95819) or to the Sisters of Mercy of Auburn (535 Sacramento Street, Auburn, CA 95603). Arrangements by W.F. Gormley and Sons.

Kelly, Kieran, Marie and Margaret, please accept our heartfelt sympathy on the sad passing of your dearly beloved dad and our fondly remembered cousin, Pete. We have such lovely memories of the many visits to our parents-Richard and Bridgie's house in Gibberwell and the many letters and photographs that were carefully stored for times of reminiscence. We shall have Holy Mass offered for the repose of Pete's soul and continue to remember you all in our thoughts and prayers. Kind regards - Anne, Jim, Josephine, Marian and Martin Furlong. Wexford. I was fortunate and privileged to have known Peter. I was working at Cal-Western Life when Peter first came over from Ireland and we became best friends. Both he and his wife Mary were like family to me and Peter walked my wife Susan down the isle. My heart goes out to his loving family. I am pleased to have loving memories of our times together.

Mr. Brothers kind, generous and lighthearted spirit will always be remembered by those of us who knew him at Sacred Heart. He always remembered the "kids" who'd gone to school with his even as we became adults. Always enjoyed running into him at church or McKinley park and listening to his stories. May your many memories and God's mercy bring you solace.
With deepest sympathy,

Sending my love to the Brothers family and mourning the loss of your wonderful dad. What a sweet, warm, funny man and the loving patriarch of such a beautiful family! I know how much you love him and will miss him, but oh, what wonderful memories he left for all of you. I am grateful to have known both your mom and dad and for the kindness they showed me. I'm also so thankful for the friendship your dad shared with mine. I'm sure Pete, George, and George are planning their next lunch together. The Cal-Western men have some catching up to do.
