Peter Foster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 8, 2024.
Peter Blanchard Foster, 76, of Bangor, Maine, died peacefully at home March 6, 2024 after a long decline in health and complications related to Lewy Body Dementia.

He was born October 6, 1947 in Princeton, New Jersey to LeBaron Russell Foster and Margaret Persons Foster. He attended The Hun School of Princeton and then pursued a Bachelor's degree studying Art and Biology at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. After graduating, he married Elizabeth (Marbie) Pickles, ironically for her, on Independence Day in 1970.

Peter was a loquacious storyteller of questionable details; his eccentricity often attributed to a hippie lifestyle, days painting abstract watercolors and life-size oils on canvas, drumming in his band Purple Haze and being one of the "half a million strong" at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair of 1969.

He dabbled in a variety of careers - including teaching, nursing and making pies - but will be most remembered and honored for his incredible lifelong talents at refinishing, restoring and building furniture, mainly in the Queen Anne, American Colonial and Pennsylvania Dutch styles.

A book collector and enthusiast of classic literature, supernatural fiction, suspense, science-fiction and fantasy, Peter especially enjoyed Stephen King novels. He loved sailing, baking (and eating) bread, and playing Rock music (and his harmonica) a little too loud.

He lived the majority of his life in Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania, but spent his last years in Maine where his children reside and where he had ancestral ties and happy memories of childhood vacations.

Peter is pre-deceased by his parents and his brothers, Warren William Foster of Atwater, California and Robert Russell Foster of Winchester, Massachusetts and Sunapee, New Hampshire.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Marbie) Foster of almost 54 years; his son Barry Foster of Bangor, Maine; his daughter Kelly Scheetz and her husband Benjamin of Bangor, Maine; his grandson Otto; and his daughter Margaret (Meg) Scott and her husband Andrew of Gray, Maine.

At Peter's request, there will be no public memorial service.

One of my first memories was of Peter in the science fiction section of gently used/Starr Books. I loved chatting with him about sci-fi and art, he and Marbie were definitely my favorite customers and I was sad to see them go but happy that they were with Family. He will be missed by all of us here at the Bookstore.

When fixing my eggs this morning, I suddenly remembered "Eggs Foster," a delight my high school boyfriend's friend used to make. Something told me to look at the obituaries, and there was Pete's name as he has just passed a few days ago. Bruce Armstrong, Pete and I spent lots of good time together in Princeton during our high school years. I remember meeting Marbie when the four of us took the train from PrincetonJunction to New York (PJ&B) one New Year's Eve. What fun! Pete's laughter lit up a room. One of the good guys gone too soon.
