Peter Green Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2017.
November 18, 1938 - November 19, 2017

Surrounded by his loving family, Peter James Green died November 19th, 2017 after suffering a stroke. Peter was born November 18, 1938 in Banff, Scotland to Dr. Herbert John Green and Betty Francis Carney Diack. He attended Aberdeen Grammar School from 1947 to 1957 where he made life-long friends. He was active in rugby, hiking and scouting in Scotland.

Peter's deep love of the Canadian Arctic began at age 18 when he signed up for the Hudson Bay Company (HBC). In various settlements above the tree line, Peter worked for the HBC as a clerk, fur trader, and an Inuit carving manager. He became one of only a handful of non-Inuit who could converse in Inuktitut. In 1959, he started the first ever Boy Scout Troop of Inuit in Baker Lake, Nunavut. In 1963, Peter, now married, returned to the Arctic to begin a career with Northern Affairs as the Area Administrator for Cambridge Bay and then Baker Lake. His children were both born in the North. In 1967, he returned south to attend university and received a BA in Political Science from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario and a MBA from the University of Western Ontario Ivy School of Business in London, Ontario. During summers, he returned to the Arctic and in 1968 hosted Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau at Pangnirtung.

In 1972, Peter worked as a Management Consultant for the Research and Productivity Council of New Brunswick then moved to Ottawa to work at Veteran Affairs and later the Office of the Comptroller General of Canada. He moved to Treasury Board in 1989. He became the Director of Departmental Accountability and a lead founder of the Performance and Planning Exchange (PPX).

Peter retired in 2001 to pursue his many hobbies including gardening, photography and reading. He volunteered with North Grenville and Prescott's Friends of the Library, Prescott's Shakespeare Festival and was Past President of the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union. He enjoyed playing rugby for the Beavers and later, the Senators as a "Golden Oldie". In recent years, he performed in community theatre.

Peter was an adventurer, a man with an inquiring mind, an amazing memory, an avid love of learning, an enjoyment of laughter, art/culture and lively discussion and a wonderful story-teller. He loved to travel, to see the beauty of national parks and experience exotic flavours in distant lands. Most recently he spent a month in India.

Peter was predeceased by his brother, David A. Green, both his parents and his dogs. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Anne Beatrice Gregory, and previous wife, Judith Gibson, his children: Andrea Elizabeth Green (Andrew Mahoney) and Michael Charles Green (Sahra Samnani) and his 5 grandchildren: Callum, Katie, and Megan Mahoney, and Makalu and Elsa Green, and his nephew Alastair Green.

A "Gathering to Celebrate a Farewell" will be held Victoria Day weekend 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or your local library.

A loss indeed, especially at the Aberdeen Grammar School FP's Canadian re-unions for his unfailing support, not to mention his rowies and kedgerees which were uniquely appreciated.

A great loss all those whose lives were enriched by Peter's presence.
He was a faithful, committed and passionate volunteer for the Shakespeare Festival in Prescott during my years in Prescott, his honest encouragement and observations always welcomed.
Not to mention his wonderful stories of a life well lived.
Thoughts to Anne, Michael, Andrea and the whole family on your loss.

Peter was a great friend and supporter to us at the St Lawrence Shakespeare Festival. A generous man with a sharp inquiring mind and a great love of rugby. We will miss him deeply.

A gentleman of a rugby player and as friendly a person as you would ever find in the bar afterwards. Honoured to have been able to call Peter a friend and team mate.

So sorry to hear of this as we saw him at the Prescott on Nov 7. Played rugby with him quite often and he was a great "character". Condolences to Ann G.
