Peter Huus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2018.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Peter Gerald Huus will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Gloria Dei Church in Rochester with Pastor Berg officiating.

After a long, courageous battle with lung disease, Peter, 76, died peacefully at home on Friday, March 9th in the loving embrace of his wife and children.

Peter is survived by his wife, Barbara of Rochester; a daughter, Kirsten (Marcus) Huus of Rochester; a son, Eric (Christina) Huus of Sun Valley, Idaho; and four grandchildren, Kate Elizabeth, Carly Ann, Carter, and Nadejz. He is also survived by a sister, Mary (Glen) Edgington of Raleigh, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Joanne (Robert) Rowe, and Kathryn (Donald) Adams; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jack E. Huus of Northfield.

Peter was born on April 25, 1941 to Edwin and Gladys (Anderson) Huus in Stanley, Wisconsin. He graduated from Stanley High School in 1959 and from University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire in 1964. He was a star basketball player in both high school and college, earning the N.H.S. All-American award.

Peter married Barbara Ann Boe on May 27, 1967 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy, Minnesota. They lived in Detroit Lakes for two years and moved to Rochester where they have lived for the past 48 years and raised their two children, Kirsten Elizabeth and Eric Christian.

After graduating from college, he worked in northern Minnesota as a social worker and probation officer. He was Administrator and Program Director at the Adult Detention Center in Olmsted County for 30+ years, where he was proud of his groundbreaking work in providing programming services for inmates. As a humanitarian, he was always rooting for the less privileged and inspired his daughter to follow in a similar career path.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to trout fish in the streams and rivers in southeastern Minnesota and fish walleye on Lake Sissabagama in northern Wisconsin. The cabin on Big Siss was a favorite gathering place for family and friends for 34 years. He was an avid golfer and helped instill the passion for the game in his son, Eric.

Peter was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and friend to many.

The family thanks Mayo Hospice for their compassionate and supportive care to Peter.
