Peter Ibbetson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2010.
IBBETSON, Peter - Departed on his last adventure on Monday, June 28, 2010. Born in Sheffield, England October 11, 1933. Survived by his wife Susan, his sons Peter, John (Kate), Mark (Jane), Richard and their mother Judith and his granddaughter Emma of whom he was so proud. In the UK he leaves his brother Hugh and sisters Loraine, Angela and Annette. When his career as an RAF Pilot ended with a 'bit of a hard landing', he became an Officer in the British South Africa (Rhodesia) Police, then an Insurance Consultant in England and Canada and, finally, a Librarian. He pushed himself to his limits as a hiker: rim-to-rim-to-rim in the Grand Canyon, Bruce Trail end-to-end a few times, the 46 peaks of the Adirondacks, the Appalachian Trail; he tackled sport parachuting, bungy jumping and cross-country skiing after 50, but regretted not getting to Mt. Everest. After he stopped running he walked 10 miles a day. He was passionate about music, nature in all its forms and justice. He won most challenges but not the one with Alzheimer's disease. Friends may call at The Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill(4th traffic light north of Major Mackenzie Dr.) on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 10 a.m. with a service to follow in the chapel at 11 a.m. Cremation. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bruce Trail Conservancy (Caledon Hills Club) or Alzheimer Society of York Region or any charity of your choice.

Peter was one of a kind. I knew that from our first meeting. I mistook the invitation to go for a walk. I thought walk meant walk – nice stroll, look at some scenery, stop for coffee. I now know walk is used interchangeably with hike and that anything less than 10k is simply not worth getting out of bed for. I will miss you. Love Norma

Dear Peter,
I didn't get the chance to meet you, but I heard all about you through your wonderful granddaughter. She told me what an adventurer you were and what a caring grandfather you were. You are in our hearts and may you rest in peace. Kind regards,

Gabriel Mendez
