ATKINSON, N.H. — Peter A. Lewis, 68, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, surrounded by his immediate family.
He was born in Atkinson, N.H. on March 1, 1940, son of Ralph A. and Lillian J. Lewis, and lived his entire life in Atkinson. Peter Lewis left this earth quietly and unassuming. It is very hard to properly describe such a unique and gifted man.
He was the president and driving force behind Lewis Builders, Inc., one of New Hampshire's leading home building companies. With its headquarters in his beloved Atkinson, Lewis Builders recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. He also created several various and successful business ventures, including Hampstead Area Water Company, one of New Hampshire's largest public utility water companies, the Atkinson Resort and Country Club and East Coast Lumber Building Supply Company, located in Hampstead, N.H.
Peter was a native and lifelong resident of Atkinson, N.H. His family has lived and participated in Atkinson public life for over five generations. Through all of his life's tests, he had the strength and the intellect to succeed. He was truly a man of few words, but when he chose to use them, they were profound and accurate. He had the vision to see the future that most of us could only imagine. His ability to solve abstract and complicated issues was a constant source of amazement and pride for his family.
Coming from a modest beginning growing up on a dairy farm in Atkinson, he succeeded far beyond anyone's dream. He never lost his grounding or his sense of who he was or where he was going. Peter was happiest on his tractor and truly loved his family and his life as a frustrated farmer. He will be sadly missed by his family and his employees who were like extended family. The town of Atkinson will miss one of its most productive and caring citizens of the past 100 years.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Christine and her husband, Harold Morse of Atkinson; his son, Daniel and his wife, Karen Lewis, also of Atkinson; his grandchildren, Jonathon, Elizabeth, Rachael and Daniel; his brother, Steven Lewis and his sister, Louise Lemery of Atkinson. He is also survived by his aunt, Betty Wood of Atkinson; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
ARRANGEMENTS: Arrangements are private at the request of the family under the direction of Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, N.H. A celebration of Peter's life will be held at the Atkinson Resort and Country Club, 85 Country Club Drive, Atkinson, N.H., on TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 2008, between the hours of 3 to 7 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to come by to share thoughts and special moments with the Lewis family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club, 136 Water St., Lawrence, MA 01841.

Dear Lewis Family,
Our contact with Peter came through the Timberlane Golf Program. His generosity with that program was just one facet of the man. We sat with him at the Golf Banquet and a more genuine person we have never met. His understanding of human nature was immense. He will be truly missed but always remembered.

To the family of Peter Lewis
My first contact with Peter Lewis was when I began to build my house on Providence Hil in Atkinson. Peter purposely stopped by and expressed a desire to help me with whatever I needed.Thereafteralso I met his son Daniel and we became fishing friends. Our meetings made me realize these men were the salt of the earth. I've always enjoyed and appreciated them immensly. Now I wish to extend my condolences to his beloved family. May our Lord and Saviour comfort you all at this difficult time.

I work for East Coast Lumber and dealt with Peter often. He always had great advice and I enjoyed his visits. He will be missed very much. He is no longer suffering and his legacy will live on through his family. I feel honored to have known him - he was like a dad to me.

I worked for Peter's company for a short time, and although I didn't have a lot of direct dealings with him, I knew him as a quiet and caring person with a special sense of humor! Peter will be missed by anyone who ever knew him no matter how brief the contact!

Peter was my landlord for 10 years at East Village Apts. in E. Hampstead, NH where I still reside. Having worked for Unitil Energy Systems for the past 19 years, I had many dealings with his company, and I know how well liked and respected he was among his employees through my dealings with some of them. I, too, have my own memories of attending some bluegrass concerts with Peter and Alice and some of their friends, and despite his position and his wealth, I found him to be a gentle, down to earth, genuine person and hard working self-made man. My sincere sympathy goes out to his family. There is no question that he will be missed by so many. May he be welcomed into heaven where he can rest comfortably and in peace.
